Hello Guys,
I have been trying to bring this motor back to life after sitting 11 years outside. I am in process of trying to get lower unit back on exhaust housing. I had a difficult time getting it off. I replaced entire water pump assembly, had dealer replace upper/lower gearcase d--shaft seals. Before I starting work I ensured gearcase was in neutral. I removed plastic shift handle that is part of a remote adapter kit that I put on 21 years ago. When I tried putting gearcase back on housing it goes until on until its about 3/4 of an inch. I noticed upper gearshift rod was touching bottom rod in gearcase. I checked position of gearshift on cowling and it appears that it moved somehow when removing gearcase. The gearshift rod is extended, thus keeping lower unit from going back into place. I tried everything I know tring to get back into neutral (retract gearshift rod 3/4 of inch). Any body familiar with my dilemna? In hindsight, I should not have removed plastic gearshift lever, however, the waterpump looked like a straight foward job. I never anticipated having half the problems that I've had. The inner black nylon gearshift linkage that protrudes out of lower engine cowling are not lined up with outside nylon linkage, thus, I cannot put gearshift lever back on. On a separte not: does anyone know how easy d-shaft should turn in gearcase after water pump assembly? Mine seems stiff. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks again in adavance.
