I picked up a 1989 Evinrude 8 HP for my son and it starts and runs fine but there is a knob on the front of the motor that you turn to unlock it so you can lift up. The knob broke and there is just sharp edges that kill your fingers. Does anyone know what is supposed to be there and is it replaceable? I dont see how you would replace it because it seems tied in with a heavy spring to release something so the motor can be tilted up. Anyone know what Im talking about or can offer assistance? Thanks

P.S This motor was made in Belgium.

Are you speaking of part #35 on his diagram? If so, I replaced mine on my '87 8 hp and its not difficult at all to do.

YES. That is the part and model. How does the old one come out? Can you give me an idea whats involved to replace with the springs and all? Thanks much

Just undo the little socket headed grub screw, #73, I think you will find using a 3/32" ?? Allen key

Note the position of washers and spacers though.

Turn the broken knob so that the tilt lock is engaged ... half turn clockwise if its not already engaged. Then you can see the little screw and all the tension will have been taken off the linkages.

Vic,

Thanks a million!

Do you mean to engage it (lock as if it were on the boat?) or in other words I have the motor on the boat now, do I want it in the position to tilt up or lock down? Thanks again. Bob

Take it off the boat, lay it down so that you can see all the gubbins in my photo. The broken knob only tuns half a turn so turn it fully clockwise so that the tilt locking catch is in the locked position. (It may be easier to access the bits and pieces if the clamp bracket is partly in the tilted position but provided the pivot bolt is not too tight it can easily be moved as necessary.)

Once turned to the locked position you will be able to see the grubscrew and all the tension will be off the linkages and springs. It should then be possible to undo the screw with an Allen key and withdraw the remains of the knob and its shaft. Catch the plastic spacer and the washer.

Refitting should simply be the reverse but I expect it'll be a bit of a fiddle unless you have nimble fingers.

for me to unlock, I have to turn it half turn counter clockwise, then the spring automatically returns it clockwise. So you want me to lock it then? So thats the default position.
