Hello to you guys,
I am getting happier 37 days left here at Osan AFB Korea and I get to go home 8 March 2008. I am going back to Scott AFB Illinois hopefully will stay there for a while with my family. Anyway, I bought a brand new warning horn for my remote control or throttle controller. My question is when I unmount the remote controls from the boat is there screws holding the back side to get access to remove the warning horn inside of the remote controls? Basically I am asking how hard will it be to replace this warning horn? I don't have my manual here with me in Korea but was thinking about this and was wondering how hard of a job it is to replace. Let me know, Bob Have a great day.

Don't sweat it Bob. There are 3 large screws on the back that need to come out. Then the halves will separate easily. Just go slow with it and don't remove or move anything else while you have it open. The horn is very simple to replace once it's apart. It will be staring at you when you open her up. The hardest part to me is finding a good place the lay the case when working on it. Kinda awkward with the cables attached and all...

Re: 1989 Evinrude SPL model E88MSLCER Remote Control Question.

RICKDB1/TASHASDADDY,

I was looking at the parts breakdown for the remote control and looks like there are alot of parts like a jig saw puzzle. Will these parts fall out when I open her up or are they screwed/bolted onto the remote control to prevent those parts from falling out? I cetainly hope they are bolted on to keep them in place, becuase it will be hard to put back together if all those parts fall out as soon as the remote halves are separated. I am pretty mechanical with a wrench but if there is alot of parts involved that might possibly fall out I get a little worried. I have never taken a remote control apart before and want to be forewarned before I do this but I am a little interested in doing this job at the same time. Just let me know if thuis will be a bear to do because of all the extra parts inside the remote control. Thanks alot for your help, Bob

Don't want to butt in, but, I did replace the ignition switch in my 1988 control last summer. I could have easily switched a horn at that point if it were needed.

The point I wanted to make is that I agree totally with Rick, with this caveat; that if you want this to be a thirty minute job, have your factory service manual on the boat while you do it. The manual has step by step service instructions and extensive photos to guide you.

You don't need to loosen much of anything to put the new horn in.

Re: 1989 Evinrude SPL model E88MSLCER Remote Control Question.

Hello to you again,
I was going to lay the remote control on its side with the throttle handle touching the seat. I have back to back seats that I was going to open them up as to lay on them and lie a towel on the seat so I don't rip scratch the seat up with the remote control then very, very, and I mean very carefully seperate the halves and attempt to remove/replace the warning horn. Now the 2 cables that come into the remote control will still stay attached to there linkages or do I need to remove them. I am really not wanting yo remove anything except the warning horn only. The less I have to remove the happier I will be. Then after the warning horn install put it all back together and remount it back on the side of the boat then do an operational check to make sure the horn works and the controls Nuetral, forward, and reverse work and the kill switch work, etc. Is that what you guys do when you go into that remote control after tearing into it? Let me know if that is correct. I am still in Korea but I am planning my boating/camping this year it is way overdue and I can't wait. I will be home March 8, 2008 for good and can't wait til the warm weather returns. I heard from my wife today that it is suppose to snow with 8 to 9 inches of snow, yuck. I hope everything goes good and they make it all right with the approaching snow storm. Take care, Bob
