I have an 89 Evinrude v4 140, I took it out yesterday after adjusting the timing a bit and it ran well for most of the day. We pulled up to the fishing hole and I was idilng along the boat just died. I had to get towed back in. I am getting power to the starter, it turns over just fine. I checked all my electrical connections but as far as I could tell I was not getting any spark to the spark plugs. Any Ideas, could it be the power pack?

Try taking the lanyard switch out of the equation then the wire going from the ignition switch to the powerpack for the kill, usually a black with yellow stripe wire.

unplug the Big RED plug. this take the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, and lanyard out of the system. using a remote starter switch, test the spark ( one lead connects to large incoming connector on solenoid, the other to the small connector, on solenoid, with the yellow/ red wire. activate switch motor should turn over and fire.

who's procedure did you use to adjust timing?

here is some good reading. http://www.boatpartstore.com/page34.asp

Re: 1989 Evinrude V4 Died

Just an update, I was going through the post on the site and the Clymers book I bought and found the inline fuse (a small 20A) located just above the big red plug, it was blown. I am thinking that is my problem but I am not sure if that will solve my problem. I didint have a fuse to replace it with so I will pick one up today and try that first. Could it be that this is all that is wrong?

I used the procedure in the Clymers manual to set my timing, however I do not have a test tank nor a test wheel, so I took it to the boat ramp and left the boat strapped to the trailer and did it there.

Usually if that fuse is blown the starter won't crank over, try it now see what you get.

That what I was thinking but the starter turned over perfect, I just was not getting any fire to the spark plugs. I am gonna give it a shot here in a couple hours. I will let you know what happens. Thanks for the input.:)

If I am able to remotely start the motor, what does this indicate has gone bad? Kinda slow sorry.

Disconnect the big red barrel plug like Tashasdaddy suggested and post back and let us know what happens.

Will do, I am gonna give it a shot in a couple of hours. If it does start after I do this what does that indicate? Not real savvy, being my first boat and all.

Ok I disconnected the big red monster plug and I still got no spark. The motor turned over fine. So now what? Power Pack? Thank you for your input.

You will need to troubleshoot before throwing darts at what it might be, that gets really expensive really quickly if you are wrong.

Have a look at cdi's website to troubleshoot

http://www.cdielectronics.com/downloads/troubleshooting guide/
Alright I took it by the Marine Mechanic this morning and we detremined that it was indeed the power pack that went out. He didnt have one is stock. Where can I get on at a resonable price? He said he could get one but it would take a week or so. I am going to need one a lot sooner than that, supposed to be taking the kids down to the coast for the weekend and would really like to get it going before then. Thanks for you input. You guys have a good thing going here, I am sure I will be back;).

Call the iboats number here and ask them for an ETA on a CDI powerpack 113-4041. They can probably get it to you by the weekend:

http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Outboard-Parts/dm/view_id.271265

It takes about 30 minutes and you don't have to remove the flywheel to install.
30 minutes huh? I will probably take a bit longer for me since this is my first one, you got any tips?
Got it ordered. Should be here by Thursday. Now I gotta keep my fingers crossed. I ordered the CDI Brand which was a lot more expensive than the Sierra Brand. Whats the difference. I figure you get what you pay for? Is that right? Thanks for your help.

I think they are the best. They have great support, products are US made and they have very good reputation with iboats forum members.

When you have the new unit in hand and battery disconnected, unscrew the old one and connect the ampenol plugs to the new one, one by one.

When you have all of the wires switched, tighten it down and you should be ready to reconnect your battery and fire it up.

Make sure that the grounds are clean and tight.

It may help to have a color wiring diagram from your service manual on hand.

Often, powerpacks are damaged by stray voltage hitting the pack. You might want to clean and tighten your engine connections while you wait for the part. Also, check the black with yellow stripe wire for voltage, which should not be there.

Look your ignition coils over carefully - check for distortion, discoloration and cracks. Make sure the grounds are good; I like to take them off and clean the base.
