I noticed you've had this problem since, at least, June of 2007. When you KNOW it's not running as it should, STOP running the outboard until you have put the issue under a microscope and made a valiant effort to correct the problem. Otherwise, be saving for a new powerhead. Better do another compression test and post the results of your findings before starting your troubleshooting process. You might be disappointed in your findings this time around. A service manual will come in very handy if you don't already own one. A model number, posted in this thread, will help others offer more accurate assistance as well. You mentioned in your post that "wot is 2200 rpms and after a few minutes will build rpms and run normal". Define normal? What is the max rpm's at "normal"? If your carbs were rebuilt last year and you have let it sit for several months without properly winterizing, another carb job might be in order. Have you made any adjustments to anything prior to, or after, the problem started. It could be a bad coil....... fouled plugs........ stopped up carb....... bad fuel pump...... broken piston rings..... etc. etc. etc........ See where we're headed here? Take baby steps and narrow down the list. Fist things first......Let's make sure your working with a good powerhead. Do a compression test and post the results of your findings for each individual cylinder......

3>____ 4>____

After that, others will be able to chime in and help narrow your search and isolate your problem.

Re: 1989 evinrude xp175 low rpms

Thanks to theoutdoorsman-
I did do a compression and had a master evinrude tech check my engine we found 3 bad cylinders and the cost to repair was pretty high {3.5k plus}, my master tech found me a replacement in beautiful condition that was built to be bullet proof alot of extra time was spent on this puppy and i'm very happy
just now going thru a 20-25 hour break in after his initial testing and run in
I'm running double oil since the vro-pump was disabled long ago
been able to run her on the river near my house for 1 hour non stop intervals and works great on being able to watch my water output at the engine and be able to maintain 10-13 psi water psi. changed the prop to a 14.5 x 21 pitch offshore prop for better lift, which has resulted in a faster hole shot to plane that has to help reduce the higher torque on the engine.
just running the river at 3000- 4500 rpms making changes often to rpm.
she is running great i'm really looking forward to many years of good service
I have no plans of topping her out just want he to last
if she runs 5400-5700 wot without any proplems we will be set.
I got a little over 2k in this engine on rebuild parts and labor and feel blessed.

ps: thanks so much for the feed back and also to let you know before the rebuild she was in the shop at about 3 different places without one of them being able to know that she had cylinder damage cost me around 1000.00 for nothing they all pointed to the carbs and rebuilt them at 350 a pop.
glad i found a master evinrude tech he's the bomb!

thanks outdoorsman and everyone on the forum
