Do a compression check and check the spark.

did this suddenly happen or is it new to you ? Unfortunatly its check all the odvious ..compression..1 cylinder down ? , sparks ..no fire on one plug..?...fuel ..insufficient supply ..blocked filters etc

Runs great=full rpm's? If so, check for spun prop.

Like foodfisher says do a comp and spark test first!!Then check the prop.
Remove the prop,then look at the side next to the thrust washer.You will see rubber.Mark the rubber and the metal housing.Put it back together and go for a ride.
Then if it does it again check the prop and see if the mark was disturbed.
Check all fuel lines for being soft/mushy.Then any in-line connectors remove/replace.They can suck air.J

Yes, use a magic marker and make a straight line from the outer hub across the rubber insert and on the inner hub/spline. Use it then recheck line upon return. Broken line=spun prop.

i have a similar problem with my 1988 85 HP force. It worked fine on my old boat, but i broke the transom and had the motor put on a different boat. Just now got it into the water this evening and it cranks and runs fine. But when you throttle up it reaches about 2500 RPMs and just before it should plane it feels like a car does with a slipping transmission. It looses power but spikes RPMs without touching the throttle. It pushes then doesnt push. but if you lower the RPMs down to about 2000 it doesnt try to plane the boat and it pushes the boat fine.. Could this be a spun prop as well or do I have a bigger issue going on?
