1989 Force 125 starts and revs right to 4000 rpm instead of idling

Hey Everyone,

I bought a Glastron 170 with a Force 125 last winter and just got around to getting her running (I'm a sailor, this is for the kids). She starts right up but revs right up to 4k. The throttle plates are full closed as verified by visual inspection. I backed out the idle screw on the timing tower just to make sure that wasn't an issue. The only other symptom I can provide is that there is raw fuel dripping from the throats when running.

Any help appreciated,

Rick

Top of page under FAQ. Carb and timing sync.

foodfisher,

thanx for the reply.

I've already gone through the synch procedure. the problem is that with the throttles (read butterfly plates) fully shut, the engine runs at 4000 rpm.

Sounds like maybe a vacuum leak or disconnected vacuum hose and needle valve in the carbs that's stuck open or bad???

The only reason this outboard will idle at 4K rpm is if the throttles are not fully closed at idle. Even if the idle screw is backed out all the way, but the adjustable linkage from each carb to the timing tower is not zero'ed (then the throttles are not fully closed). Let's be clear we are talking about the throttle valves and not the choke valves which are on the front of each carb. Another cause could be that the control lever is positioned at maximum fast idle position.

Not criticizing, I'd do the link and sync. again, double checking every step.

Does it SOUND like 4000? Check your tachometer. Is the balance tube between manifolds missing, disconnected, or broken?
