I bought a Force 150 off of Ebay where the dealer did a bait and switch. He auctioned a 1990 motor as a newly rebuilt motor, then after my funds cleared, said that that engine was dropped by accident but had another engine with little or no use that was in mint condition that he could offer as a replacement. He checked it over, said compression test was OK and all looked like a new engine that was never rebuilt.

I unfortunately took him up on it. When I had a local marine mechanic check it over, he found the head gasket was replaced, the compression was 155 psi on cyl 1, 123 psi on cyl 2, and 132 psi on the other 3 cylinders, the lower drive unit leaked out oil from the seals, the skag was broken completely off and rewelded back on,
and that the bottom 2 spark plugs were completely clean while the others were dirty (possibly bad lower carb). The seller insist that the engine is sound and that I or my mechanic don't know anything.

I have heard that a variance of more than 10 psi between cylinders means the engine needs to be rebuilt. What I need is the qualified source that I can refer to to prove that this engine is not right or other things to look for to prove one way or the other what the engine condition is. I want the truth, I am not trying to only find the negative. This guy has lied to me on a couple of items. He has 470+ good transactions with 6 nuetral and 1 bad rating from buyers and sellers. I have not rated him yet.

I may have to sue this guy which could trash his reputation on Ebay and Paypal for fraud. I have to be certain and be able to prove that this motor is a lemon or not. It appears to be a wornout piece of junk that he repainted to look good.

Re: 1989 Force 150 - What qualifies a lemon

Hello Bob,
I hope I can be of some help. I also run an 89 150 Force on a 19 ft Arriva boat. I had to rebuild it in 94 and had a stator replace last year but other than that it has been fine. Running like a top this year.

I am currently looking at my shop manual which you can pick up at most marine places. It is a Clymer manual. There are other brands out there but am told Clymers is probably the best for Force motors.

Compression: your motor should be reading between 145 and 165 on all cylinders with a variation of nor more than 10-15 psi between any two cylinders. Mine (and I just checked it over the 4th) is running right at 160 with a 5 psi variation across the board. I would assume your mechanic got these readings after squirting oil in the low cylinders. In any event your readings indicate there is work to be done and it aint like new as advertised.

The bottom two plugs being clean could also indicate water ingestion into the cylinders also. Water is turned to steam inside the cylinder and cleans the plug.

I agree with you in that this looks like a re-painted piece of junk. In my opinion he is trying to rip you off. A blind man can see that this is not mint condition.

This is what youare looking at:

- top end rebuild: around 2000 dollars

- possible lower end rebuild or re-sealing: 300 to 600 dollars.

- god knows what else once you get it mounted up

Get your money back

Good Luck

Deerdog

randrew45,

sounds like you got Screwed. Why did you trust the guy? I would complain to Ebay. They will help you. I was looking at a 175 yamaha on ebay and it looked clean. I almost bought it. Luckily it was an hour and half away from me. So i decided to one day surprise the guy before the auction ended. Turns out that the lower unit was milky colored, compression was off by 30 lbs in one cylinder and the freaking tilt trim was not working. He also put a fresh paint job on it. but under neath looked like crap. my point is I asked him to just sell it to any unlucky guy on ebay. And he said he could not do it because he had sold another motor on ebay and it turned out to be another piece of crap and the buyer complained and he ended up having to re pay the guy. so i think you can get your money back if you commplain to ebay enough times or if you talk to the right people. hey, here is a advice. DONT buy anything anymore unless you can test it yourself. there are crooks out there. ebay is the playground for a bunch of fraud and scams. WATCH OUT.

take this as a lesson. next time you should know what to do. good luck,

Sorry to hear about all that. I too, have been taken by someone on ebay, and may have the second in the werks (haven't received merchandise i paid for yet,and it's been 2 weeks).
Unfortunately, even tho this engine of yours may run,it wont for long without some major greenage.
I hope you can get your money back.
