New to forum so take it easy on me. First let me tell the problem. motor cranks and idles. when you put it in gear it foils the plugs because the timeing doesn't advance, i guess. I purchased this boat at a good price because the motor was doing this. The previous owner had purchased a stator to fix this problem but said the flywheel would not come off. And he is right the fly wheel will not come off, I have a flywheel puller on it, i've soaked it in krol oil, applied heat, pried up on it and hit crank shaft with brass hammer, wouldn't move. And before you ask i did take the nut and washer off. Is there something else holding this? I've missed with it all weekend and have about come to cutting the thing off and purchaseing a new fly wheel. I've never been a force owner but i am a pretty good shade tree mechanic.

Try an air or electric impact wrench on the puller center bolt. I've never had it fail.

Dear sir, you probably will be forgiven for getting frustrated. 1st thing first, you said you had a puller and you hit it with a hammer and you applied heat, I have no way of knowing the order or the process you applied but try this. bolt on the puller make sure it is the three bolt one, designed for the purpose, tighten it up and apply some pressure, then get a gas axe, torch or whatever, and carefully !!!!! warm the flywheel around the puller in circular motions. You dont need to get the flywheel too hot, and assuming it is alliminium it conducts heat much better than the steel shaft. While you are doing this, tighten the puller until it is bloody tight, warm around it a final time and hit the puller bolt with a hammer. There is a method to the madness, tapers have to be cracked to release the pressure, so try it and remember you are only warming the flywheel not making it hot!!!! cos alloy melts around 500degrees c good luck

Yes, and heat causes magnets to lose magnetism.

Re: 1989 force 85 hp/stubern fly-wheel

O.K.day 3, i have the correct 3 bolt puller, impact wrench, torch, brass hammer,.....put puller on fly wheel...tightened the ever living heck out of it, then tightened it with impact wrench, didn't move, applied heat with little acetylene torch, while tightening with impact wrench. didn't move.(broke my rib in the process)heated some more, hit it with brass hammer, tried impact wrench, more heat, impact, hammer, cussed out threw hamer cussed out again and give up. If i can't get it off today, how about cuting it off and buying a new flywheel. am i not appling enough heat? what about the wires under the fly wheel? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!

Get the puller good and tight and then hit the big bolt on the puller straight down with a 2lb. sledge and hit it hard. Tighten up the puller some more and hit it again. Repeat this process until the flywheel comes off. Walker

hi, i never like to use heat on flywheels because of the potential for damage. if you are thinking of cutting off the flywheel you would be better off paying a proper mechanic to remove the flywheel intact as they are pricey items. the way i have always found to be successful is to use the correct puller, tighten it hard and use something flat and sturdy like a ten or twelve inch adjustable wrench to prise upwards from the starter motor or similar strong point that is close to the underside of the flywheel. (push down with your palm on the head of the wrench) apply steady pressure while tapping the underside of the flywheel sharply with brass hammer 2 or 3 times and then rotate the flywheel 180 degrees, tighten puller a bit more then prise on the underside again while hitting flywheel upwards. should go after a few attempts.

Unforgiven, You may not want to hear this but my flywheel took SIX 6 days to get off. Listen to the advise above. What I have done is use Pen oil on flywheel bolt attach puller TIGHT and wack the daylights out of the puller bolt tighten more oil waita few hours tighten--WACK continue untill the thing comes off given time it will.

Good luck

I recently went through the same process. I used a 5 lb sledge hammer and a three bolt puller. I tightened it down then hit it with the hammer. I didn't slam the hammer but dropped it with a little force. Every ten hits I would try to tighten the puller. It took over a hundred hits but suddenly the flywheel popped loose. I know it was over 100 because I counted.

Keep trying, but don't hit it too hard you can damage the engine internals.

Success at last. Like i said i'm a pretty good mechanic but when something don't work right i sometimes panic. You've heard get a bigger hammer, well i called in a somewhat expert and he used a bigger impact and a bigger torch and a bigger hammer and after heating, beating, and tightening the thing shot off like a rocket about a foot in the air. So i used a combination of everyones ideas thanks, i hope the stator fixes my problem, I purchase this boat at a low price because the owner couldn't get the flywheel off. I do not like Force motors but just couldn't turn down this deal. I'm starting another topic on timing and spark plugs. thanks again and i hope everyone finds good water in front of them.
