This group has already solved one of my Force related problems and I thank you all......perhaps I can ask for a little more.....my throttle quadrant doesn't have a fast idle lever. Most if not all the boats I have been in have a lever one raises from the rear of the quadrant to increase the rpm while starting from cold. Mine doesn't have this feature, just a key start and its seperate, on the dash....does that mean I have an automatic fast idle or ?????

Thanks in advance..

Tim
Winterpeg Canada

"Does anyone in the area (Winnipeg or Kenora) have favorite dealer they use...I have been using Ronds Marine on Dugald Rd but it's a long drive from Charleswood"

Your "choke" may be built into the ignition switch. If you push and hold the key, for 3-5 seconds before turning, a solenoid injects fuel into the engine intake. If you remove the engine cover, and listen carefully while pushing the key in, you should hear a small clicking noise as the solenoid actuates.

ANother way to test it; with the engine running, push the key in. It should have a noticable effect on the engine.

I think Kenora is talking about the fast idle when the engine is originally started.

Is there a chance you can take a picture of your control box..and post it here. We can then give you the procedure to advance for start.

TMD

Sure I can take a picture....but then what....how do I put it somewhere for you to see.....too new to this computer stuff...and I'll see if the key can be pushed in or not...never thought of that

Tim

Running omc's all my life this threw me also,,when running in neutral,in water of course,,pull straight out on throttle lever,it is best to pull where it goes into box. After you pull it out, push it forward for high idle,,this is how mine works,,,let us know.

Re: 1989 force 85hp controls

Haven't been able to borrow a digital camera as yet so I can't post a picture, however I looked at the throttle quadrant....the throttle comes out the side of the box consequently there is NO WAY to lift it at all (I tried), the box has only one sticker on it (made in singapore). Also I tried pushing in on the key, lo-and-behold it moves and the choke mechanism works, but only as long as I hold the key pushed in. Isn't there supposed to be a timer or something that holds the choke on for a few moments after the engine starts and then releases or am I just dreaming....Thanks again.....

Tim

This may or may not help as my unit is a little older. But if there is a knob just behing the throttle lever, pull it out and this disengages the shifter and allows you to push throttle forward to idle up without putting it in gear. It may be different on newer models...

Also on the choke... Mine is a solenoid that stays ingaged as long as the key is in and holds the choke butterflies on the carbs closed. Again, mine is a little older and might not be the same.
Good luck.

Look for a button in the center of the shift lever where it attaches to the control box and pivots. It should be covered with soft rubber to keep water out, but flexible enough to push in. With the lever in the neutral position, push this button in to disengage the shifter then push the lever forward for the high idle. I have the same engine and this is how my control box is designed. Hope this helps.

This is the same year as my motor,,did you try grabbing the shift handle right where it pivots and pulling towards the center of the boat,,and if it pulls out, then push forward.

Well you guys have done it once again; I tried all the suggestions and the last was the answer, I grabbed the centre of the throttle where it pivots on the box and pulled towrds me; ta da...it moved about an inch or so and I can now control the idle speed in neutral....

Thanks again

Tim
