sorry for the length but wanted to answer as many questions as i could up front.

ok, bought bass boat, 85hp force outboard, 1989, late year.
said to me upon inspection, 'engine worked fine till i shut it off after running on lake mead with no issues'. 'wouldn't restart'. knew up front that it did not work. compression was said to be fine and did prove to be so.
plugs seemed to be dry, thought fuel feed though pump had been rebuilt and original diaphragm was good. bought it.
at home, no spark.
checked plugs, plugs good.
checked stator and trigger coils good (more later).
no voltage from cdi through to coil. bought two new used cdi's and three new used coils. didn't want to one step myself and cost was ok.
good spark now. however only an occasional backfire. thought timing. pulled flywheel. all seemed fine though the composite magnet had come unglued in places. re-glued to exact same location. re-assembled. seemed fine. still a backfire.
as a last resort, on the terminal strip the sequence should be 3,2,1 from left to right at the end of the terminal strip for the trigger coils. colors are the same for 3 and 1. decided to swap them. immediate fire up. don't know how this could be but hey, it's running.
idle wrong and could not get into to gear without dying. synched the carbs, adjusted the idle needle screws. without prop on and in tank. idle good, was able to go wot in gear from an idle.
got to the lake, idle fine, dies when shifted into gear. turned needles a little richer. all is fine.
took it out on the lake. running great at 3k rpm(at least that's what the tach says)(i never run anything wot)........ for 30 minutes.
so now is the final problem, for no apparent reason, engine looses power and stalls. there was some unusual sound as it started to die while i was cutting power. wait a few minutes. able to start at an idle. engine is not hot, crank turns with stiffness at compression stroke as it should. runs ok for a few minutes then stalls again. this continues. sound was never repeated.

choke is electric and not activated
fuel filter is not plugged
checked tank, added a few gallons. gauge showed an increase to 5/8 full. gauge works, have gas

the only thing that i did not touch was the scavenging "dog bone" thingy.

obviously someone, mechanic, anyone touched this after the owner first had trouble.

any ideas.

thanks

The backfire or cough is from an air leak somewhere??
Possibly at the port cover gasket?
If it starts, do the starting fluid test.
Can of SF sprayed around the intake side of the motor.
The area under the coils/packs is part of the intake, so is
the base of the motor under the carbs.
If spraying the SF makes the motor run and different(cough,
stutter, miss or stall) then there's an air leak somewhere.
Inspect the fuel pumps diaphragm. It should be fairly flat,
if it's streched it can cause problems.
The stator can test good and still be bad :(
The leads from the trigger are real thin and break under
the shrink wrap, tug on each wire and see if they come
loose??
