Howdy!

I purchased a 1989 Gamefisher 9.9hp model number 225-581991 serial number 4324. This motor sat for several years prior to my purchase. I have replaced the impeller due to the original one dry rotting away. I cleaned the impeller housing, and metal plate/shim. I removed the entire engine out of the case/covers, blew out all the passages where water would run through for cooling, there were no clogs at all. Blew out the suction port on the lower unit, no clogs there either. Reassembled everything and it still doesn't pump water as it should. During idle, none comes out. If you rev it up, it will spit out a little bit, and I mean only a little bit out of the 2 holes under where the engine cover latch is. Any ideas, advice, wisdom is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

There are no gaskets. Only the metal shim that goes between the lower unit and impeller housing.

Re: 1989 Gamefisher 9.9hp - Not pumping water

I just purchased a 9.9 (I believe a 1994 model). I was having the same problem and discovered it has a thermostat under that fitting with the two holes. I tested the thermostat in boiling water (after cleaning the crud) and it worked. Then I ran some water in to prime the pump a little (with thermostat out) and it started pumping water. I get really nervous in the time between when you start an outboard and when it starts spitting water, so I was unwilling to run very long without water spitting. Probably did a lot of unnecessary work pulling impeller and thermostat, but I'm confident now.

a good tip is to knock off the lower unit and put it in a bucket of water and spin the shaft with an electric drill...this way you know its working ....
Other reasons...not deep enough in water or you missed out the pin/key that connects the impeller to the shaft .....test dont guess
