1989 Johnson 110 HP outboard

Hello, new here, new to boating completely. Read the FAQ and have a few questions if you can help.

On the remote control unit, there is a small black dial like thing under the key, on the johnson site its listed as a "KNOB & FRICTION ADJ. SCREW ASSY" it is now at a horizontal level now.. What is it for?

Also, big question, boat runs on a cadorette 15 ' bowrider at up to 35 mph.
From neutral the handle is straight up, pushing forward it clicks into the trolling speed. I push further to go faster, here is the issue, pushing doesnt do much at all untill I get to near the end , imagine, up is twelve o'clock, full is 9 o;clock, so at around 10 'clock it seems to pick up speed only.... then down to full ... so maybe its a cable adjustment?

Can anyone help with these two bits of info...

I am very new to boats and everything but somewhat mechanical. If you have any help with anything else here would be great as well..... Thanks

The friction adj. is for the throttle lever resistance, you can make it tighter or looser depending on your preference.
The position of the throttle lever when the revs increase dramatically is very near the end on my 88 110 also, seems like all of the throttle response occures in the final 2 inches or so. I assume that this is normal. What you need to be aware of is that the butterflies on the carb are perfectly horizontal when the throttle lever is all the way forward.
BTW what lake are you on?

Thanks for the reply. I am trailering, not on a lake, usually Kawarthas.

So I can play with this and see the differences without issue then ?

Ok so you have all the power at the end as well then? I didnt understand the carbs , butterfly? Need to be aware of what?

Oh and since it loks like we may have the same or smilar motor. What is with the beep on the remote? When I turn key to start, short beep happens ? Also once there was a long beep, trim was way up, still in water but high high up for seconds, long beep... was this a warning or alarm?

I have no manuals, nothing, do you have anything with regards to this as a basic user manual? I would hate to spend $90 on a new one from a site.

Thanks again.

Yes, you can adjust the friction dial to your preference.
In order to check the butterflies (round brass coloured plates that open and close in the carbs) you will have to remove the plastic cover thats in front of the carbs. I think you will need a 7/16 socket or wrench to take off the 7 or 8 bolts that hold the cover on. When you move the throttle lever forward you will see the butterfly plates in the carbs open. You just want to be sure that they open all the way, perfectly horizontal on both carbs.
As for your beeping, long steady beep means overheating... How far out of the water was the engine when this occured? Not trying to scare you but DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE before determining the cause of the long beep. If the motor was far enough out of the water to prevent water from entering the pump that could be why the alarm sounded. If thats the case, you may need a new water pump impellor. One of my manuals states "running the motor out of the water for 5 or 6 seconds will damage the impellor".
I believe the quick, short single beep when you turn the key is just to let you know that the horn is working, kind of like the bulb check function when you turn the key on in your car.

Check out ebay for a used factory service manual. You can usually pick them up for fairly cheap. This is a must if you own a boat and plan on servicing it yourself. Take care of her and she will take care of you.

BTW, I too boat on the Kawarthas/Trent Severn. See you on the water!

Thanks.. I was launching, had the boat tied to post almost beached while on shore for few hours then went back out, I started with engine tilt up... solid beep. Lowered right away, then left, ran for couple hours, probably 40 litres of gas tubing etc... and no issue... I did launch again the next day and no issue either so I assume no problems with the water pump or impellor? I am new so this small mistake was well learned to drop engine all the way before anything. Anyway, I will be taking boat for a week of use, docking it for a week, no more launch and retireve which will be welcome.

When I dock on a lake, at a rented cottage, what security do I need to take care of? Do I need to empty boat? Lock to dock? Lock gas cans or batteries? is it fairly safe ?

i have never locked by boat. true there are areas where people steal thing out of boats. common sense, put things out of sight. use fenders (bumpers) to keep from scratching the boat.

I too have never locked a boat up. Keys are left in it, although there are always fellow boaters around at my paid slip, and we all watch out for each other. That is not to say that there are not some evil ppl out there. As TD states, use common sense, and keep things out of view. Recently, at a certain lock on the Trent, there have been cases of kids untying boats while the boaters are asleep, waking up in the middle of the lake. Im sure the police will pinpoint these buggers quickly though, if a boater doesnt grab them first!

My boat is tied to a dock 150 kms away all week long, I go to it on the weekends and I dont lock it up, in fact I even leave the key in it. (though I probably shouldent) Never had a problem. Im in a paid slip with several other boats and the owner's house is right there.
Nothing is 100% safe and locks only keep the honest people honest.
