[h=1]1989 J60TLCEA - VRO disabled. I recently cleaned the carbs by disassembling and spraying carb cleaner through everything I could get to... replaced floats and needles. Sprayed out the high speed jet but did not remove it. Did not remove any of the punch plug caps.

Now she runs great at idle and will throttle up fine in neutral. When in gear she will bog down and only accelerate if I activate the primer by pressing in the key. Any thoughts?

My hunch is I need to pull the carbs again and do a thorough cleaning. Just not sure why it will throttle up fine in neutral. Any tips for punching in those caps? I always feel like I punch them too hard or not enough and am worried they will leak. Thanks! Fish on![/h]

How it runs in neutral means nothing, yes you need to re-clean the carbs, at least one main jet is probably partially or completely plugged.

Time to rebuild the carb(s) the correct way now with rebuild kit(s). Shortcuts are never short. JMHO!

Wrong approach dude, remove all carbs, tear them apart remove and clean everything with spray cleaner and compressed air, blow cleaner and compressed air through hole and tube everything then go to.

www.boatinfo.no/lib/library.html. click Johnson, find your motor, find your cab and rebuild your carbs correctly.

Check back if you need more help, that's what were here for.

OK, I took the carbs completely apart. The jets were all spotless and I didn't see anything plugged up. However, I did notice that two of the three floats were very much below horizontal when holding the carbs upside down. I'm guessing that was the issue. I cleaned everything really well and reassembled. The core plugs on top of the carbs don't seem to seat really well. Anybody use any kind of sealant over these since they are on the outside of the carb? I had to scrape something off to remove them.

Nail polish works well. You shouldn't need it, but I use it to be sure.
You used new Welch plugs, right?

Yes, those are the domed soft aluminum, right? Put in the hole and punch them flat. New ones came with the rebuild kit.

Great. If you punch them properly they should seal fine. As I said, I use a bit of nail polish around the rim. Dries quickly and seals fine.
Two daughters at home so there is always at least one colour that is out of favour and I can borrow. :)
