This motor is on a project bass boat. I've been told the motor is blown, but don't have any other details.

I've drained the lower unit oil and didn't see any red flags. I've also sprayed some lubrication into the cylinders, and the flywheel rotated pretty easily. I think I had the plugs out when spinning the flywheel by hand if memory serves me correct.

If you know of a great OMC mechanic who has a passion for working on older OMC motors like this in Minnesota or the Dakotas, please let me know.

Thanks guys,
Jon

Step # 1 is a compression test.-----Do that before consulting / taking it to a shop.-----Cheap to buy and cheaper than gasoline to deliver the boat to a shop.

Thanks, I was planning on doing a compression check and a spark test myself. The one mechanic I did talk to mentioned he would start with a leak down test. I was a little surprised by that, as everything I've read has mentioned starting with a compression test or making sure the engine turns over before investing much time-effort-money into the engine.

That is a crossflow motor and its is common for them to eat piston rings from the design. Compression test first.....
