1989 Merc. 115 -Makes noise in reverse

When in reverse and giving it some throttle it sounds like the lower unit is jumping out of gear. It works fine if I am in idle speed in reverse. In forward all is OK.

This noise when the boat is in the water or on the trailor?

Get your manual out and check the adjustment of the shift cables, it sounds like the motor is not going all the way into reverse and when you apply throttle it is skipping out of gear. Had the same problem this summer as the cables stretch mine started to skip out of gear in reverse, a simple adjestment and you should be fine

The boat is in the water when this is happening. Thanks I will check cable adjustments.
