Hello everybody.
I m from France and have a question only mercury specialists now the answer.
For the same price (6000$) I can have a 1989 mercury laser 220 hp XRI with 250 hours OR a 1995 mercury 200 EFI with 600 hours. What would be your choice ? What are the + and - for both of them ?
My boat is a guiliani river racer (italian) 170 inchs for 600 pounds (without engine).
New engines in Europe are very expensive and I can only buy a used one to replace my merc 150 xr2.
Thank you in advance.

Definately go with the 1995 200....is a much better motor, will make as much if not more power than the overrated 220, and the more current 2.5 litre [vs. 2.4 litre 220] is cheaper to repair and easier to modify for increased power...
the 220 stopped production in 1989, it is a chrome bore cylinder which is difficult to service after a failure....its maximum power output stock was about 200 hp....even with the lower hours, I shy away just because of the age.
the 2.5 litre motors have been built since 1989 to the present, with some modifications along the way....iron cylinder liners which will accept oversize pistons significantly lowers the cost of the eventual rebuild you will be doing, considering either one of these motors is going on a light, fast boat....
