Hello All, Looking for some information. I own a 1989 Raven BR190 with a Mercruiser 3.0 that I purchased a few years ago. This spring, I went to do a full tune up (Oil, Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, point & Condenser). I ordered the cap and rotor kit per my model (MCM 3.0) and Serial number (0C535112). When I removed the cap, I found that I did not have Points or Condenser. Upon reviewing the data info on the Arrestor cover, I noticed that it did indeed reference Point Gap and Dwell??? I was a bit confused and figured that maybe someone upgraded it or that there may have been a mid year change that I had not seen. The cap and rotor were that same, so I just moved forward with those.

Once complete, I also decided to change the carburetor as it really needed it. While I was at it, I decided to change the fuel pump and filters.

Starting the boat is no longer an issue yet it is a bit sluggish and has some ignition pinging (Had that before as well). I decided to set the timing. Upon researching my year, model and serial number, I kept finding the procedure to place a jumper on the white leads from the distributor as part of the procedure to set the base timing.

PROBLEM - I do not have the white leads from my distributor. I only have two wires coming out of it. I must be missing something, yet I have been unable to locate anyone else with this issue. Without the leads to jump, how do I put it into base timing mode?

I did check the Timing as it is and found it advanced one degree. Per the data plate, it should be at 6 degree BTDC. I did move the timing to see how the motor reacted and it did sound much better at the 6 degree BTDC, but that is in the driveway on muffs.

Has anyone come across this and do you have any suggestions on how to properly time this motor with this configuration?

Thank you in advance.

The 1989 model year could have points or DDIS ignition. Not being able to see inside your distributor my guess is the prior owner changed it to something else. Post a pic of the distributor and see if there is a ignition module on the exhaust elbow

Your your should have timing set at 4* BTDC

alldodge, Thanks for the reply. I will post a picture of the distributor I have, tonight. I know there is nothing electrical on the exhaust elbow.
