Yes, Our 89' 80hp merc has charging problems and the Repair shop wanted $800 to put a Stator and Rectifier on it. I have a feeling they are trying to ripp me off. Where is the stator and rectifier located at in the engine? how do I check if the rectifier or both it and stator, and if actually need replacing? where is the cheapest place I could find parts for this motor? Serial Number is 0B302873 THANKS

Re: 1989 Mercury 80 charging Problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to iboats.

Most of that is for the Stator which is new and improved. The originals have a high failure rate, usually at the coils for the igntion system. I haven't seen many fail on the charging coils, but some do. They might need to replace that because it failed, or they may want to make a pre-emptive replacement. That part costs $400ish. I wouldn't replace it unless it was absolutely necessary. 90% of the time, charging problems come from the voltage regulator/rectifier. Most rectifiers fail from loose or corroded battery connections, or if the battery was connected backwards. It is highly unlikely that both your stator and regulator are bad, although it's not impossible I suppose.
