1989 mercury outboard engine was running erratically and eventually the engine would rev up and prop would not spin. so I took it out the water noticed that the prop was moving up and down if I tugged on it. so I replaced the prop along with the prop sleeve because the prop sleeve was destroyed as you can see in the picture. I checked the shaft where the prop sits and it was fine it was not damaged at all. After I installed the new prop and sleeve took it back on the water it shifted fine and engages in reverse perfectly fine but when I went to go in forward gear It did not engage and sounded like their was a grinding noise so I right away put it back in neutral. Any ideas on what Is causing this.
