I have a 1989 mercury outboard. I hve owned it since new. was out fishing last Aug when the alarm went off. So i shut it down and lifted the motor to see if anything was blocking the water screen as it was real mungy that day. All was clear. I strasrted it after a little rest and the alsrm never would shut off. and it does not beep when you turn the key before starting as it has always done. So strted to move along and the motor stoped running. The motor was hot but not so hot that I could not hold my hand on it. The pee hole is pumping water and it does seem strong , but warm. Can the water pump be junk and still be pumping? and the alarm never shuts off even when it Ice cold?? well I made it home by starting and going a while and the stopping. then going again. Never seemed to be to hot but did not want to take a chance. The oil tank was full so I no it was not the oil.<br />Thanks guys Macojoe

Re: 1989 Mercury

First off...Was it a solid horn or a beeping horn? You did not say what size engine you have but most are the same. Look under the oil tank. Disconnect the wires going into the tank with the key in the on position....did the horn stop? Solid horn is overheat. Beeping horn is low oil warning. Really need to know which you had. But most times its a faulty oil sensor. If the horn stops when you disconnect the wires at the oil tank. Look down inside the tank and move the float up and down a few times to see if it was just stuck. Happens alot. good luck

Back of the engine near the sparkplugs is a sensor screwed into the heads. Disconnect it and see if the horn stops. I think its a brown wire if I remember. If it stops I would replace the sensor first since you can put your hand on the engine.
