Considering a 1989 Rinker 232 as next boat, how much wood and foam, Stringers, Transom, foam. Not wanting to take on project boat and good lookers can have hidden damage.

Hi Oldrod 47,
Welcome to the drydock...

Not sure what it is you are asking...

If you are not looking for a project boat, why would you need to know how much wood, foam, stringers and transom???

If you are wanting to buy the Rinker, I would do a very thorough inspection of it, or pay for a professional marine survey...

Most boats that are more than a few years old [10-20+] and have been sitting out in the weather, in a somewhat neglected state...read that as out in the open, uncovered...may have rot issues deep down inside, that can be very difficult to assess, with out doing core samples, etc...

I was hoping to hear from someone with experience with the Rinkers of that age and size. Simple question-was wood a major structural component of the that class Rinker. I believe that USCG required floation in boats up to 20 ft. but could be mistaken.

The boat in question is 2 states away, Owner states that is always stored inside when not in use, (original owner) Probably will call Rinker. A little research can save a lot of time and expense. If it was a significant amount of money and potential expense I would get a Marine survey done.

OK, I understand now...

I certainly hope I didn't come off as an offensive idiot...I just didn't get what you were asking...I humbly apologize if I inserted my foot in my mouth...

Hopefully someone with knowledge about the construction of Rinker boats will chime in or you can get hold of Rinker Boats and ask them... http://www.rinkerboats.com/

And, if this helps, here is a link to USCG Boat Builders Handbook... http://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/boat_builders_handbook_and_regulations.aspx

From what I have read there, you are correct about floatation foam only being required in boats 20 feet or less...

Best regards,
GT1M

No Harm - No Foul

I sometimes think I ask a question that is simple and it turns into something entierely different. In any case, I've read friscoejarret's thread and it is enough to sccare a sane man. Awesome work, my last boat was a Sea Ray and at the time it was the gold standard, at least thats what I thought.

Wood rot and wet foam seems to be epidemic for that vintage small boat. Hard to get a handle on when or if manufacturers took steps to correct the problem. Wish there was a data base that gave the info, don't ever expect that to happen. Next best is an asset like I Boats.
Quality sucked in many things in that era. Been looking at Aristocrafts from late 60's to late 70's minimal wood in transom, had one and loved it-a little small for what I want now. Really want to get back on the water.

May look for something bigger and in AL and that brings in the Marine Survey as the value goes up.

Thank you for your understanding...

And I completely agree that it seems most of the stuff made during that period was all about profit and speed, and very little about quality and longevity...

If this thread doesn't produce the results you are looking for...May I suggest the following re-post of a thread titled something along the lines of ...

Need Info; 1989 Rinker 232 Boats, Please Help!!!

Or something along those lines...

Maybe that will get the attention of some Rinker Aficionados...

I have noticed that sometimes, getting a good answer to a question is all a matter of timing and catching the right guys at the right time...

Best of luck in your quest for a nice boat...may it be what you are looking for, be in excellent condition, and have the exact right price...:D
