Hello everybody,

Ive been on Iboats for a little over one season now but most of time is spent over in the mercury I/O section for my current boat (85 Scarab I). Learned alot and had a great boating season with the boat.

Ive found a complete boat (boat/motor/trailer) for sale on craigs list for pretty much dirt. $300. Its a 1989 SeaRay 160 bowrider with the rebadged mercury 100hp outboard. The women selling it says there is "interior damage" She said the floor is soft in some areas and some of the seats arent 100%. The engine supposedly started up last spring ok and the trailer looks to be in ok shape. She mentioned the tires might not hold air. Not a huge deal to me as tires are cheap and I have my current wheel/tire combo that should bolt up to those no problem to get it home.

I figure i at least have to replace the floor. I feel more then likely ill need to replace parts or all of stringers and transom. Its hard to tell since i havent looked at the boat yet, just seen the pics. I feel if the motor runs or i can get it running with fairly little work and I put new tires and maybe new bearings on the trailer I can sell those real easy. The trailer is prob worth 700-1000 if its fairly clean after i fix it up. And the outboard has to be worth $500-1000? Im new to outboards so im not sure.

Id like to restore it to useable condition and possibly throw it in the water for a ride and then sell the whole combo. Or maybe keep it. I dont know.

Is this worth tackling or is it going to be a several year project with huge cash involved? Im quite mechanically inclined with engines so that doesnt really bother me. As for woodwork Ive come a long way in the last two years. I gutted and rebuilt my kitchen with the help of my girlfriend and a few buddys here and there. Came out pretty good in my book. So i have tools and can acquire what i dont have.

Here are the pictures i have for now.

Thank you for your advice/comments!

I'd jump on it for $300 purchase price.

That's kind of what Im thinking. I just don't need more stuff sitting around. But I'd like the experience of restoring a boat and with only $300 initial investment even of its a total loss I'm only out $300...

Hi Ethan,

If the floors are soft, then the transom and stringers are probably rotten as well, so you are looking at gutting this boat completely, replacing the stringers, transom, foam and floor. Figure on $800-$1500 for that for materials, depending on how you do it. Once you have done that, your additional cost will depend on what you do: are you going to just repaint the floor and put back in the original chairs, or are you going to: replace the vinyl, replace the carpet, reupholster the chairs (or buy new ones). Your final cost will be anywhere between $2000-$4000 (or more), depending on what you do. Time wise, figure at least 200 hours of labor. The number of years it will take you will depend on how much time you can dedicate to this.

On the plus side, once you have put that time and money in, your boat will be better than new.

Mine is a SR 180 BR with a 4.3 inboard. It was my first boat bought last year. that had a soft spot too. That was in March 2012. When we delved deeper, the transom was rotten and so was every piece of wood on board. I had to gut it completely and rebuild ALL the wood interior. I finished it in October 2012, pretty much working most weekends plus taking days off. Difference between yours and mine apart from 2 feet in length and an inboard as distinct from outboard is that you paid $300, whereas I paid $1400. I had green stamped on my forehead. Now the boat is pretty bullet proof. So is $300 worth it. Hell yes.

So I picked up the boat this morning. I took a chance that the wheels off of my ez loader trailer would fit on the hubs for this one. They did and the bearings looked good enough for the 30 mile trip back home. I tweaked a few other things on the trailer to make sure the were good (ball hitch bolts, chains etc). I took the cover off of the outboard and it looked fairly clean underneath. The head to block area didnt show any leakage etc. Thats all I could really tell since i dont know outboards that well yet. Even taking off the cover took me a min to figure out :/

Next was attempting to trim up the outboard. There was a battery in there that was clearly junk. I hooked up some cables to the truck and connected power to the boat. After some jiggling of wires I was able to get power at the "helm" then the motor trimmed up no problem. I wasnt really holding my breath on any of the electronics working... Thats all stuff I can redo quite easy though.

Anyway the trailer made it home no problem and almost towed better then my other one. Although this boat weighs a bit less then my Scarab does. In the next couple weeks I plan to winterize my other boat and slide it over out of the way in the garage. Then back this one in and see what ive got. The transom actually feels decent from the tap test and the yanking on the outboard test. The floor is a total loss though. If the stingers are good or even close i might actually try to restore it! Im still undecided.

Here are a few more pictures.

I see you have caught the dreaded MBS and your lady with her hands on her hips shows she's aware of your condition too.

Welcome to the club Britisher!

I see in your future some substantial symptoms of the strain known as MBS fiberglass itching.
