Hey all,

Decided to clean out the fuel filter of my motor I just got and found a lot of metal shavings in the bottom of the bowl and some in the screen too. I cleaned them out and replaced the filter - what would be your next steps?

Install a fuel/water seperater on your transom to remove this debris before it reaches your motor/filter.....the fuel/water seperater cartridge type filter will do a better job of removing this debris than the motor- mounted filter/screen. The Walmart/Atwood unit($28) is cheap enough and does a great job of removing debris and water....

Thanks Robert. I just picked this motor up and cleaned the carbs and didn’t notice anything unusual in the bowls. I bought a brand new 6gal gas tank and fuel line so hopefully it’s not from my fuel. To be on the safe side I’m going to dump it anyway and clean the tank and pick up one of these fuel filters!

Check shavings with a magnet to be sure they're metal....maybe a 30 year old motor had a metal/steel gas tank at some time?.....I drain my carbs a few times a year and especially at lengthy lay up times(several weeks/ months)....
