I have the a 1989 Thompson w/a V8 Chevy w/ 280 outdrive. had boat one year have records from previous owner with maintenance history.no mention of current problem. Recently I noticed water intering boat through the steering arm shaft. When boat was pulled found exessive slack in the steering arm bushing also found helmet bushing real sloppy loose. I added a planing fin to the foot a few months ago aside from that I have made no changes to exsisting stock 280 drive.<br />I know that there is some underlying fault that caused this problem. But I don't have a lot of out drive knowledge. I have ordered bushings and gaskets ect. make repairs, I am now wondering wether I should also replace the U joints while I have it down. Any help would be appreciated.
