Im swapping out my 89 Force 125 for an 89 Evinrude 150 V6
The mechanic said the tach may not be compatible for the Evinrude. I believe that Force used a 20 pole tach. The boat is an Arriva so it used the large 5 in. bayliner dial tach with square bezel. I havent looked at it yet as the boat is at the shop but are there settings where you can set it to 12 pole which is what the Evinrude needs?

Glenn, for what it's worth I had a somewhat similar issue (not really but sort of). I wanted to get a Faria tach to put on my boat (I got a 1990 Bayliner Capri with a Force 90 motor, it didn't come with a tach). Well, as you stated, Force uses a 20 pole alternator but Faria no longer makes tachs for 20 pole systems. So I talked to a tech assist guy at Faria and he sent me plans (very simple I might add) to build a pre-scaler (a simple electronic box that will adapt a 20 pole system for one of their tachs). It's just a simple IC board and a few resisters and wouldn't cost you more than $20 in parts. But, in any case my point is Faria did offer me some kind of solution. I didn't build my prescaler yet because I haven't yet bought my tachometer. Go to the Faria web page and contact the tech assist guys. They're pretty helpful and I'm sure they'll be able to help you.

Thanks for that. I would need to call Faria about converting a 20 pole tach to a 12 pole tach. When I see my boat again I will have to get underneath & check if there are pole settings. i have heard that some 20 pole Faria tachs are non adjustable & some have a 12 pole option. The info out there is limited.

The 20 won't work.

The hole under the tach is a standard hole that all boat makers use.
A replacement will just slide right in.

I thought that may be the case. I picked this tach up at a salvage yard awhile back. the guy just threw it in. I looks exactly like the one in my boat from the front but the white label is mangled. looks to have 4 pole settings. Anyone wanna guess if it is compitable for 12 pole?

That one might be for an I/O or straight drive.
The tell is that is says 8cyl. and only hits 6000.
Most outboards go up to 7 maybe 8000.
