Engine does not want to idle. Have cleaned carbs and adjusted floats 1/32 lower than parallel to carb body.
Its runs worse than before. Please help. Thanks, Mark

could be an ignition problem, or still some cleaning needed in the jets. You might get some fresh fuel and oil, and take the motor out and run it at speed for a while -- may find that the problem takes care of itself.

NGK plugs, and fresh gas and oil have been done. I would like to know the correct float level the manual says float parallel to carb body, but mechanics say bend down slightly up to an 1/8 inch.

check spark at cylinders while it idles, and see if you have spark. :)

If everything else checks out, take a look at"Sony2001" reply on this forum problem:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=014431

I adjusted the carbs (with muffs)on my 85HP exactly as Sony2001 suggested and it worked great. Much, easier than adjustment covered in manuals, since you don't need to adjust with motor in water while in gear.

Good luck

Re: 1989 US Marine Force 85 HP

Engine is now running at 4000 rpm adjusting needles out seems to have no effect, can lean though, but cannot get engine to run slow. How does one adjust timing on this engine, and what is the correct setting? I am over my head, and need a starting point.
The fuel is 50 to 1 and fresh, the carbs are clean with new gaskets, floats are 1/32 of an inch down, with new sparkplugs and good blue/white spark.
Am in process of checking the reeds.

Thanks Mark

Forgot to mention - Adjusting the Screws "All the way out" is the exact opposite of what you should be doing. Read the prior posts
