I just bought my first boat, it's a 1990 2100 Maxum with a 1990 2 stroke 120HP force on it. I've took it out twice now and the fist time it was just having a miss or a surge in guess you would call it. The second time it not only had the miss and or surge but It died five or six times when I tried giving it throttle. This was after it was driven for thirty minutes and I was starting it to go back home when it was dieing, so I don't think it's bc it needed warmed up. I guess my main concern would be the miss, surge it has. For some reason it feels electrical to me. I'm not sure if this is a common problem with these or not. I would also like to know if anyone knows how I could tell if this motor is an L Drive? I would really appreciate any feedback anyone has on these problems, thanks.

An L drive is nothing like an outboard.
It's motor is inside the boat and the drive is under the boat.
An outboard is just hanging on the back of the boat.

First thing is to test the overheat buzzer.
It sounds like it might be getting hot and the buzzer isn't working making it run poorly.
Key on, at the buss bar where the wiring harness attaches to the motor(port side) ground the orange lead.
It should make the buzzer sound off.
You can replace with any 12v horn from a car or motorcycle.
The louder the better.

Second thing is do a compression test.
Then a spark test.
It's important to ground the plug leads if you use the key to turn the motor over while testing.

In all my years I have only seen 2 bad coils.

Clean the carbs and check the reeds.
Then install a filter between the carb and the fuel pump.
