I recently purchased a 1991 Ranger 481V with a Yamaha ProV 150 (LD) outboard motor. I've had it out a few times without any issues. This last week (Thanksgiving), my family and I went camping and took the boat to a local lake. I took it out at least once a day....never traveling very far to fish. The last day, I took my wife and two kids out to fish without any problems. We came back and I immediately picked up someone else. As I got past the "no wake" zone, I punched the throttle to come up to a plane. When I did, the alarms (red, yellow, and green) started flashing along with a solid beep. I immediately shut the boat down to an idle. The alarms stopped. I tried it again with the same result except I let the boat come up to a plane....and the alarms stopped. We traveled a couple of miles to fish. When I backed off the throttle the alarms came back on, but went off when the boat leveled off to a stop. I decided to go back (not knowing what it was). Again, the alarms come on and went off as the boat reached a plane. When I got back to shore, I checked the oil reservior on the boat, and it seemed a little low, so I filled it up, but the alarms were pretty much constant after that. I loaded the boat on the trailer, and took the cowling off and noticed another oil reservior on the motor which still had oil in it, but was at the low fill level line. I'm assuming this was the reason for the alarms. Also, as long as the key was on, the alarms would sound whether the boat was running or not. I've read some of the posts on this forum about oil injection problems, but I still have a few questions.

1. I've read about a manual switch used to fill the reservior on the motor from the reservior on the boat. I guess that helps determine whether the pump is working or not. Where is this manual switch? I can't seem to find it.

2. I've also read that you should be able to hear the oil pump when the key is turned on? I just hear a clicking sound coming from under the dashboard.

3. It's been hard to find a manual, can anyone help with troubleshooting the problem? Where to start?

4. How fast will the reservior on the motor empty if the pump from the larger reservior fails......2 miles....10 miles? I'm just curious if the boat had this problem when I purchased it.

5. Also, I know this may sound odd, but I need to ask. Would the oil pump run off the same batteries the trolling motor uses? Those batteries went dead during the week. I wouldn't think it would, but again, wanted to ask.

The motor appears to run great. I'm assuming that if the motor oil reservior is filled, the alarms would go away and everything would be ok until it emptied again. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 1990 150 PROV LD Oil injection problem

I have a 99 S150 and the manual transfer switch is at the rear of the motor(red switch). From what I understand is you should be able to trannsfer oil from the remote tank to the main (on the motor) from that switch.

If it doesn't transfer oil it could be oil pump wiring(check for corrosion) or the pump itself. You can test the pump by using jumper wires to put 12 volts directly to it. The brown wire is positive and the blue is negative. If it does transfer the oil you could have a faulty float assembly or oil controller.

These troubleshooting are from Bill Grannis troubleshooting tips I saved. Hope this hellps some.

do a forum search on precision blend.
while finding information in the yamaha manuals on it is difficult its there.
3 bars flashing and a steady tone indicates a system malfuncion. the ECU :sees: there is enough oil in the remote tank for transfer yet the engine tank switch says its low, could be the ECU,the wiring from the ECU to remote tank, remote tank pump or simply a clogged filter or other restriction in the transfer line.
I have posted extensivly on this and about how the v6 systems changed over the years.
the 1990 system must also have a working trim sender or automatic transfer is inhibited, the 1999 system is different.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

RodBolt,

When you say a system malfunction, are you referring to something in the motor itself or the fact that the remote reservior has enough oil, but the oil reservior on the motor is low, and the system doesn't seem to be able to transfer oil from one to the other. I found a manual that stated that the yellow light was for low oil and the green and red indicators with a steady tone indicated a problem with the transfer of oil from the aux tank to the main tank on the motor. Knowing that the tank reservior is low, and I can't hear the oil pump running, all three lights coming on at the same time would make sense, correct? Does that sound right? Sorry for all the questions. I just want to make sure I'm focusing on the right problem (oil) and not something else. Thanks!

I found a toggle switch in the upper left corner of the CDI. It's the only toggle switch I can find on the motor. I'm assuming that's the manual transfer switch. I switch it on with the key on and nothing happens. Does the motor have to be running in order for it to work?

You might want to take Rodbolts advice and do a forum search on precision blend to get some knowledge on the system.

Guessing I would think the key would have to be on to send the 12v to activate the circuit but motor may have to be running too.
