1990 2 stroke Mercury 8HP: Excessive gas/oil leaking from exhaust port...

Engine has trouble idling (starts on Choke no problem), once choke is removed...engine dies within 10-30 seconds.
I cleaned the carb, it seemed to help (I didn't run too long as I'm always concerned of running these motors in buckets of water vs a lake).

THE CONCERN now after cleaning the carb is that I noticed what seems to be an excessive amount of gas/oil mix coming from the exhaust port. Please see the picture attached! The color is amber/darkish.

Engine has always ran great. We stopped using the engine due to an upgrade about two years ago and kept the 8hp in good storage with no gas in carb (However, probably still some left in fuel lines and bowl, etc...) Started the engine up a year ago just to keep her running...had no issues then.

Any advice would be great on the oil/gas mix coming out of the exhaust port.

Thanks much!

IF.. the water level in the bucket is high enough; there's not need to worry
make sure the impeller is in good condition, after sitting for two years?????)

The sludge you see coming out is un-burnt fuel/oil mixture being washed out by cooling water

If you took the carb apart you should have replaced the gaskets. A bad fuel pump diaphragm, primer diaphragm or a base gasket on wrong could cause your problems.

How did you clean the carb?

Put more water in the bucket.

Let it warm up longer with the throttle raised a little above normal idle.

The "sludge" is normal.

Check the spark and compression on both cylinders as a dead cylinder will make more sludge.

The longer the motor is run in the bucket, the more sludge because the oil in the bucket water is recirculated. Change out the water with a fresh bucket full.

Recirculated water with oil in it can cause the impeller to disintegrate. Lost an almost new impeller by not changing the water and kept topping off. The combination of the bucket water heating up and the oil ate up the impeller.
