1990 225 johnson what rpm?

i was wondering what rpm is best for running any amount of distance? i have read about lugging horror stories and i know that reccommend wot for my outboard is 5000-6000 but is that is what is reccomend to run lets say on a 15 mile trip.my motor turns 5200 wot but i always back down to about 4700-4800 is this bad? i have asked many people but no straight answer.i am a new member and have noticed there is an amazing amount of knowledge on this web sight. thanks

No matter what rpm you cruise at, the wot rpm needs to be about 6000 with your average load. You can run all day at 6K or at 3K if its set up properly with no damage being done. Its lugging and not efficient at 5200 wot, so its lugging and not efficient at 3K.

thanks for the reply i will make sure compression,ignition ,fuel is correct and then prop pitch to get 6000 wot . is this the right way to go? thanks again

That will work. We prefer to work with set up to gain rpm. That increases efficiency. We only drop pitch (new prop) as an absolute last resort.

Is this a question of efficiency or reliability? Obviously at WOT you are burning a heck of alot of gas.

Both. If its not set up properly it wont be efficient, at any rpm, nor will it live as long as it should.
