1990 25hp Evinrude backfiring and dying

Engine sat for about 1 year. I installed a carb kit and changed the plugs. It idles really well, starts pretty easily. When I give it throttle it starts backfiring quite a bit, once in a while Ill even see a flame shoot out the exhaust. Sometimes it'll die immediately after backfiring. Not sure what to check next.
