motor is a 1990 30 hp J30TELESS

Started it in water and noticed the cowling was filling up with water, upon further inspection during running noticed water coming out by the top spark plug. It isn't coming out directly next to the spark plug but next to it on the case through a gasket.

I am assuming it is the gasket.. #49 in diagram?

Am i best off replacing #49 and #18?

Thanks in advance guys!!

Replace # 49 but if it's running okay no reason to replace # 18.

Yea, I replaced that cover gasket on my 30 as well. Not a bad job. If it were me, I would go ahead and replace the thermostat while you got it open.
Note: You don't have to remove the cylinder head as I have pictured here.

Re: 1990 30 hp help

Swapped out gasket (#49) with a new one, when i disassembled it the gasket fell apart in pieces. I went through and cleaned the mating surfaces and reinstalled.

I'll run it tomorrow and post results for the next guy who has same or similar issue.

Thanx again for the input and advice.

I second Jaspers comment, replace the thermostat and thermostat gaskets while you are in there :)
