I want to change the impeller on my Evinrude 4hp Deluxe (1990), and I'm trying to remember if I have to remove the powerhead in order to do the job. I checked the service manual briefly, and saw no reference to it, but might have missed it. I'm recalling that I had to remove the powerhead to get at the shift linkage. Can anybody clarify for me?

Re: 1990 4hp Evinrude

Now that I think about it, maybe it was a '57 7 1/2 Evinrude that I was working on a couple of years ago. Alcan had a response to Grumps that referred to that situation (removal of powerhead to access shift rod connector) in a '64, so maybe it was the older motor -- and maybe there is a better way with the '90. I could still use some help, though -- anybody familiar with the '90 model, or something similar?

alcan -- you still out there?

Hi Old Boat
Yea I'am still here. First let me say I'am not too knolagable about your model. Having never worked on one. But my clymer manual dosen't say anything about removing the power head. The closest parts manual I have is for 1988 5hp. Beteen these two sourses I belive your shift shaft slides together, indexing with a flat on the shaft. Sorry I'am always about ten years behind in tech lititure.

Re: 1990 4hp Evinrude

Thanks, Alcan. I put it aside last weekend, thinking it was more than I wanted to get into at the time. I'm glad you posted that note on the '64 -- thinking maybe there is a connector that I can access on the '90 model, maybe by dropping the lower unit a half inch or so. I'll go back through the service manual.

I find a parts manual more helpful than the OMC service manual, by the way. On the old ones I normally have the parts manual, and get along pretty well. On the newer one, I have only the service manual -- covers a number of motors, and doesn't give the parts blowups (at least most of them) that I find useful.

Keep the old ones running.....
