1. Would a shallow nick off one of the permanent magnets cause an intermittent jerk, when under load, in gear?
(PS?There is no intermittent jerk in neutral)

2. Can a one-piece permanent magnet ring inside a flywheel slightly dislocate/move?, causing a bad signal and then an intermittent jerk?

Thanks for your comments.

A nick would probably not cause problems. The one piece magnet can not move It is either glued on or falling off. In any case location is not critical because the magnet only charges the CD box and battery. It has nothing to do with timing.

Now, if you have an intermittent jerk with a loud bang there is the possibility that the lower unit shift may be out of adjustment causing the drive dogs to "skip" Try adjusting the hex collar between the upper and lower shift rods. Try about 1/2 turn in the direction that moves the rods apart. This biases the shift to forward. Check to be sure that the engine will still go into neutral and reverse.

Try unhooking the shift cable and put in gear by hand.
Don't be near anything or anyone. Have someone at the key ready to shut down.

If it still bucks or thumps the dog in the lower is worn and needs to be dismantled and turned around.

Shifting slow when putting into gear can cause this.
The shift linkage out of adjustment can also.
