Hello,

I am new to this forum and would like to thank anyone in advance for their input. My motor lost it's ability to go above 3000 RPMs the other day. Checked ignition and I'm not getting any spark to #1 cylinder. I swapped #2 and #1 coils and the problem was still in the #1 cylinder. As each CDI has two independant circuits on each, I moved the trigger wires to the spare terminals for the rear CDI and connected the coil appropriatley... Can/Should have I done this? Or does #1 and #2 HAVE to be connected to the front CDI and #3 alone on the rear(with nothing else on the other CDI circuit). I am asking this because my problem is still there. If I can do this, what would my problem be? The trigger/timer itself? I have always thought that the whole trigger/timer goes and not just one set of leads, but maybe it is common. Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated as I am frustrated beyond belief. Thank you, Evan.

You moved the trigger wires for #1 cylinder to the unused half of the rear CD unit? Sounds like a reasonable method to troubleshoot. If #1 cylinder still failed to fire, I would suspect that either that half of the CD unit is bad (not uncommon), or something is wrong with the trigger coil. Check the resistance of the trigger wires with nothing attached. It should read 48 - 52 ohms. Also check the stator wires. Blue to yellow. They should be 680 - 850 ohms. Color code on the stator wires may have some additional color stripes like brown and or black, but look for the blue and yellow stripes.

I checked the trigger wires and all 3 pairs are around 52 ohms. The stator wires you mentioned measured in at 770 ohms. Is is possible that the trigger is still the culprit even with a good resistance reading? I checked both CDI's and they seem to fully working (tested each CDI circuit on a known working cylider).

First check all your ground connections from the coils to the mounting plate. There is also a ground that goes from the mounting plate to the engine block.

Now that I think about this, you may have to move the CD units around. Just moving the trigger wires may not work. You probably have to move the stator wires too. I know it's a pain, but try that just to be sure.

Sounds like the trigger and stator winding are OK. It's possible for the trigger to be bad, but not likely. Look at the terminal lugs on the ends of the wires. Usually there is a piece of heat shrink. Sometimes you can have a bad crimp, or broken wires that is hidden inside the heat shrink causing ignition problems.

one thing you might try to check the trigger, clip your meter on the trigger wires on the cylinder that wont fire, get your reading now move the wires around at the point where the wires enter the trigger see if you get any meter movement, those wires tend to break at the point of entry to the trigger, sometimes making contact in the idle position and going open when the throttle is advanced a little bit good luck don
