I have a 1990 90 HP force. The engine takes a lot to get going. I Have to put it in neutral and put the gas on full and choke it and then it will start, sometimes. Once I get it running it will run great until i have to turn it off. IF I wait a minute and try to start it, it seems like it Floods and is very difficult to start. Does the boat just need a tuneup or do I have other issues.

Thanks, John

Very typical of early 90's force motors.

Very good chance that the fuel pump needs a new diaphram, about $12 at any Mercury dealer. Give the dealer the motor model number to make sure you get the right part. It will take you about 1/2 hour to change it.

If the diaphram is bad, it leaks fuel into the block and causes it to flood.

Also, you do pump the fuel hose primer bulb till firm, before trying to start it, right?

Also, do you have the "US MARINE" or "MORSE" single lever control? These have an independant throttle control when in neutral, that many owners are unaware of. In neutral, pull the entire lever sideways, or toward the inside of the boat. It should move about a quarter inch or so. The handle can now be pushed forward, without engaging the lower unit into forward. In essence, this should allow you to rev the motor up a few times just to get it's mind right. When the handle is brought back to center (neutral) position, it will pop-back in it's normal position, and again control the lower unit.
It comes in handy at times as you described.
