1990 90hp force smothering itself.

It seems my motor runs much better with the cover off, I'm 99% certain this is related to it choking on it's own exhaust fumes.

The question I have, is how should I go about pin pointing this issue?

There are several post on here where the exhaust bellow (connects to the pee holes) is cracked. Also there is an exhaust gasket in the lower unit that sometimes leaks. Search the board for either the exhaust bellow or exhaust gasket to find these posts.
