hello all, i was looking to recarpet the deck of my boat. i have seen some similar cases on this topic. i was wondering on my back deck if i can remove it, by cutting the rivets? or can/should i carpet it on the boat without removal? if i replace the deck should i seal and with what. noob, i am willing to tear into it, however trying to give the misses a heads up, i mean get approval for costs. i want to do this the right way so it will last for my kids! any guidance and direction of threads will be much appreciated.

thank you!

You can drill out the rivets on your back deck to remove them, they should be blind (pop) rivets with the little hole in the center of them. The hole will keep your drill bit centered on the rivet, use a 3/16" dia. drill bit.

If you replace the decking use exterior grade plywood, ABX is your best choice.

Use epoxy resin to seal your plywood with, 3 or 4 coats. Seal the topside and edges, some folks seal the bottomside too but I don't. If you just seal the topside and edges of your decking you should be able to get away with just 1/2 gallon of epoxy resin.

If you want to seal with the epoxy I'll give you a link to a place you can buy it online for $40 a half gallon.

Here's a link to what I did on my Tracker last fall:

Just click on the link.

As far as extending your deck, post some pics of what you have to work with and we'll figure something out.

if i use the old decking which is in good condition besides a little corner that broke off in removal,do i have to restain, i plan on removing it again in a year or so. also there is a peice of the boat (the face plate that holds my front deck up) that is riveted from the outside of the boat. what kind of rivet is this and how to remove and replace. when i got the front deck out i couldn't stop removing screws and taking other stuff apart. i knew i would be dissappointed only replacing the front deck and not the rest:)
how do i post pics?

This is the best way to post pics:

Reusing your deck is ok to do, but you have to remove all of the old glue and reseal it. Removing the old adhesive is time consuming and messy... but will save you money. The best way to remove the old glue is with a belt sander.

The faceplate as you call it is actually a bulkhead and you don't want to remove it, it is part of your boats structure and you will weaken your boat if you remove it.
