Hello everyone. I have seen this done a lot on car forums and thought this might be a cool thing to do here. This is going to be my "buildup thread" for our family boat.

Little history: 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 CX. Has 5.0L Mercruiser with Alpha One Gen One Outdrive Purchased the boat in January. When we bought it, we knew the water impeller in the outdrive was shot. Since this is officially our first boat, we decided to take it to a local boat shop to have it done. When we took it there, the mechanic immediately noticed that our engine block was cracked in multiple places. They quoted us something in the $5000 dollar range to have a new (or reman, not sure) engine put in and have the outdrive fixed. Little bit of sticker shock for the new boat owners but we knew going into the whole thing that boat meant "bust out another thousand".

Better picture of the truck than the boat but this is the day we took it home. One of the few days the Pacific northwest saw snow this past winter...

Long story short, we decided to do the majority of the work ourselves with the help of forums of course, and service manuals. The three owners (myself, my father, and my brother in law) are all very mechanically inclined and once we got over the fear of doing the project we jumped right in.

We are having a new engine built by a local machine shop, the owner of which is my brother in laws friend, and since everything in our engine is ok besides the block it should be a fairly simple switch. So far we have pulled the engine and the outdrive, and have the engine down to a long block ready for the machine shop. Last night we pulled the boat off the trailer and are prepairing for a two week haul on doing a ground up restore on the trailer

List of plans for the entire package
1. Upgrade bad 5.0 to 5.7 (not really performance, just reliable)
will include custom paint on engine to match theme of the boat
2. Replace bellows and gimble bearing in transom assembly
3. Replace cracked and worn water hoses.
4. New exhaust manifolds and risers
5. Fiberglass and paint some "mistakes" the P/O made
6. Remove old decals and replace with custom made ones
7. Clean carpets and vinyls
8. Ground up restore on the trailer with custom paint wheels and LED lights

I will keep everyone posted with new pictures and updates (that is if anyone subscribes). Anyone who has gone through a similar process: if there is something that you learned while doing this any advice or things to look for would be helpful.

You should closely inpect the transom and stringers for rot once the engine is out. Not saying your boat has hidden rot but it is over 20 years old.

JCB996: I will try to get some pictures up soon. We're still trying to get the trailer finished so we can put the boat back on before the weather turns...We live in the pacific nw so we could run out of nice weather later today.

richoman: We did start checking some of those things out. We were pretty nervous at first as the bilge and transom areas was very dirty and looked like there were cracks. Once the engine was pulled, I jumped into the bilge with a hammer and started tapping on everything, especially the transom and motor mounts. Ended up they were very very solid.

We will be cleaning and repainting the bilge area to clean it up a bit. While the engines out, we will be cleaning up the transom assembly and filling a few holes the p/o put in for a fish finder. We also need new battery cables and a new bilge blower fan and ducting.

Use a drill and sample the lower transom and the stringers in a few places. I just went through this a month ago with a buddy and that boat looked great and seemed very solid.

Be careful upping the power in the engine. The drives are geared to match the engine. LUsually the 305 and 350's have different ratios. At least they are not so far apart that you couldnt make up the difference with a prop. Just something to keep in mind.

ricohman: We will be sure to do that. We have to install a new bilge drain, and do some minor fiberglassing so drilling will be inevitable.

90stingray: I was curious about that myself. Most of the shops we talked to about having the engine swap done said nothing about changing gear ratios. Common ration for a 5.0 Merc is 1.50 (as my research shows). The only ratio to swap to would be 1.32, which I assume is for a big block. We are really only adding about 40 horse, which as you said, we should be able to compensate with a prop.

jcb: Hoping to get to take pics this saturday. The boat is at my brothers place and I wont make it over there till then. Ill try to get them asap for you.

What is the capacity on that trailer? Looks a little undersized for a 20ft boat and doesn't appear to have any brakes

It is the original 1990 escort trailer (cheap piece of you know what if you ask me, thats why were rebuilding it.), that the boat came on. No brakes on the trailer but it seems to tow and stop just fine behind our trucks. If we were using a small truck or SUV I'd be putting surge brakes on it. We have some friends with pretty much the same boat and trailer combo, and they have brakes on theirs and it doesnt seem to help a whole lot.

It's a "manual loading trailer"...j/k
We took the winch off that trailer for our fishing boat trailer I restored earlier this year. We ordered a new heavier-duty winch for it...sprisingly enough, still made in china.

Ok, so yesterday was a good day of work. We started on the trailer at about 7:00 am and worked until 5:30pm. My brother in law had finished all of the welding friday, so it was all a matter of getting out the grinders and sanders and makin the stupid think look good for paint. No more rust problems, and no more weak and useless bolt together joints. Trailer is welded up and the bunk mounts, which had shifted on more than one occasion it appears, aren't going anywhere.

Here are the pictures.

Almost the finished product

While we were waiting for the paint to set up, we cleaned up the wheels a little bit and shot them with a satin black. Also shot the leaf springs while we were at it. The axle itself is galvanized and is now the ugliest part of the trailer. We will probably swap the steely's out for some nice aluminum wheels this winter so we wont have to worry about them rusting on us. The fenders are my favorite part. They turned out great! I found a good deal on a pair locally here so they are brand new and very heavy duty. Once they cure we will mock them up and drill the mounting holes. The old fenders had grip tape on them so we will probably be getting some to put on the new ones too.

We have a lot of work left to do on the boat so this is not the finished product by any means.

I`d still use u-bolts over your welds as now your axle is effectively welded to the frame. If a weld fractures your axle and the trailer will be parting ways.
I always thought the u-bolts were also used so you could adjust the trailer to fit different boats and set tounge weight.

Axle is connected to the frame via leaf springs which are bolted on. The Different pieces of the frame were held together with ubolts and random pieces of angle iron. The bunk mounts were ubolted to allow adjustment of tounge weight, but the trailer has been with the boat for 22 years and they probably will never be separated, so we welded them in the same place they were giving us the proper position and tounge weight. If we ever sell the boat, the trailer is definitely going with it.

Your axle is connected to a sub frame which is now welded to the main frame. I would still use u-bolts. I've been welding for decades on all sorts of vehicles and this is just my suggestion.
