Started my winter project to rebuild the 1990 Crestliner Phantom I purchased in 2008. When I bought the boat it came with a soft floor down the middle so I replaced a few sections with treated plywood and cheap carpet. The past couple years other areas of the floor began to get soft so I decided it was time to replace those as well. My research told me the treated plywood might be a problem with the aluminum. So I went to work removing the floor to see what I'd find. After tearing out the floor here is what all I decided needed to get done.

1. Replace all flooring with 3/4" Marine Grade Plywood covered with Resin and 6oz Fiberglass cloth.
2. Replace all wood in the bow with 3/4" Marine Grade Plywood covered with Resin and 6oz Fiberglass cloth.
3. Reconfigure the bow to accommodate the trolling motor batteries (moving from the transom to the bow for better weight balance) and maximize the storage. This will require that I have the bow seats replaced with new and removable seats so the bow can be a fishing platform or seating. This also requires that I replace the live well.
4. Since most of the vinyl panels are attached to the flooring I've decided to replace all side panels and the vinyl with 1/2" exterior grade plywood sealed with either deck sealer or waterproof paint.
5. New pedestal seats have been purchased and will be installed. The pictures show 4 pedestal seats but up until October I only had 2 pedestal seats and 1 back to back seat.

After removing the flooring I found that most of the foam was in acceptable condition so I won't need to remove that.

Here are a few pictures of what it looked like before I started tearing it apart and 1 picture of the bow as I have it configured. I will be removing all of the bow wood to take additional pictures of it empty once it warms up a little.

Are you using epoxy or polyester resin?

With the weather being well below 0 the last few days here, I've been sitting inside pulling staples so I can use the old panels as templates.

Does anyone have recommendations for reasonably priced and decent quality vinyl? I also need to be able to buy Vinyl Buttons and Hidem to match it. I'm looking for value rather than just the highest quality.

Upholstery vinyl, correct? Not deck (flooring) vinyl

Try trim jobber on evil-bay

Signup and get 10%+ off coupons for Joann's fabric. Several members get decent vinyl, inexpensively there and then save 10% or more. IIRC, 40-50% off isn't out of the ordinary..............

Yes, was looking for upholstery vinyl. I'll check out Trim Jobber. I did check out JoAnn Fabrics but forgot about their coupons! I've signed up and will play the waiting game until I get a sample of something that will work.

Thanks for the tips!

Nice Crestliner, is it an 18'r? and what motor do you have on her? If you're using epoxy resin for the 3/4" decking you don;t need to use cloth too. What's the plan for deck covering?

Here's another option for the side panel vinyl. https://www.marinevinylfabric.com/pr...nt=23064337926

It is an 18' with a 1992 120HP Johnson. The motor sputters a bit when its cold but overall runs really well. I think there might be an issue with the Carb kit I used last summer because I used the aftermarket Sierra kit and my mechanic told me that some of those pins don't quite fit right. I figure I'd try to get through next summer and then go back to the OEM kits.

I'm curious why I wouldn't need to use cloth with epoxy. I contacted
Mod EDIT
and was recommended to use fiberglass cloth by both because the resin itself isn't strong enough for weight. I'm more than happy to save myself the effort if it really holds the seal on the wood just as well.

I finally received samples from
Mod EDIT
a vinyl supplier and they match their seats pretty close, and in my book, close enough. I just need to contact them to find out if it hits the 30oz or higher mark.

As far as decking, we've decided on carpet and I think i'm going to go with
Mod EDIT
carpeting. It happens to be on sale right now plus some discounts and seems like it's an decent quality for the $.
Mod EDIT: Please don't attempt to defeat the forum software's editing of competitive sites. Iboats is an online retailer and offers this free forum. You don't have to shop here (please at least consider it) but iboats doesn't need to drive traffic to their competitors. Mods regularly edit posts that have attempted to defeat the auto-edit software. Protecting their business interests should be completely understandable and expected. It is part of the rules WE ALL agreed to when we joined.

I don't take a Coke vending truck and park it in Pepsi's lot offering free samples. And would likely be quickly escorted off the property if I did. And I should have expected it.

As suggested, I'm going to keep my photos on a hosted site. It warmed up enough the other night to get a little work done in the bow so other than trimming a couple pieces to size and cutting the hatch compartments I have the bow configured and cut. I added that picture to the album.

Let me know if the album doesn't work and I'll switch to photobucket.

You want to make sure and use a minimum of 30oz Marine Grade Vinyl. This is where I get mine and it's A GREAT VALUE!!! http://stores.ebay.com/Trimjobber-C...891892015&_sid=12796515&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 He sells everything you'll Need. Do you have a Stitchin' Machine???
No Stitching Machine but there is a local upholstery place that will take care of the things I need to sew.

All of the side panels are all staples so I won't need to sew those. Tentatively planning to go with solid colors instead of stripes throughout.

Joel, the suppliers you spoke w/ WANT you to use cloth w/ epoxy because they sell it. In an aluminum boat, the wood needs to be made waterproof or at least water resistant, and for that, epoxy doesn't require cloth.

It does make the epoxy coated wood stronger then epoxy alone would. And depending on the quality of the surface you're applying it too (and it's moisture content), epoxy w cloth will resist checking and cracking better then epoxy alone will. A small number of members have had checking and cracking problems w/ epoxy alone, but the vast majority don't.

This is great to know. I'd already purchased the cloth but my time will be saved! Thanks for the info.

The last couple of weeks have not produced anything picture worthy but 95% of the wood panels have been cut. Every time I thought I was done cutting I found a few more that needed to be replaced.

The next step is to paint all of the vertical panels with an oil based water resistant primer. Since most of these panels are going to be covered with vinyl and not consistently be exposed to water the primer should seal enough to make them last a long time at a fraction of the cost of the epoxy resin.

A little piece of advice for anyone taking on this project is to buy your bulk vinyl before you buy your boat seats. Trying to match to the seats that have already been purchased with both bulk vinyl and hidem has proven to be very challenging.

Did you try trimjobber on evil-bay.

Several have had great success getting vinyl from them to match other vinyl and/or paint
