Having major starting problem when cold. There is spark, no smell of unburnt fuel but some days just won't fire.Once it has started for the day it gives no further problems. Any ideas

Does it have a conventional choke or a primer system? If it is a conventional choke then check the flaps are fully engaging together...they do have to be adjusted from time to time. If it is a primer system w/o choke flaps.....check the primer solinoid and lines. Se if you have any air leaks in the lines. You may not be getting a proper prime.

Welcome to the IBoats Board!

Bob

A 1990 model will have the primer solenoid system. As long as the system is functional, try this starting procedure:

Pump up the primer bulb till firm. Turn the key "on" and push it in AND hold it in while cranking. Release the key when ther engine starts (of course - LOL!).

To verify the primer functions, remove the engine cover and have a friend turn the key on (don't try to start) and push the key in several time while you listen for it's operation - it'll click each time the key is pushed in. I believe the primer solenoid is located below the VRO pump on that engine.

If you gave us the correct model year, this unit also incorporates QuickStart. Q/S electronically advance timing 10 degrees every time the engine is started. You should have a high idle speed (maybe 900-1000 rpms) until the engine comes up to temp, then rpm drops to normal. Is Q/S functioning??

-John

Bowie - I'm having a similar problem with a similar motor. Mine is hard to start cold about 1 time in 10. Like yours, once it's been started it will never have a problem starting again that day.

I've taken mine into my marine mechanic a couple of times, but each time it's started without a problem and been given a clean bill of health. I would feel more stupid if I hadn't seen this type of thing happen so often with computers...

Does your cold starting problem happen every time, or about 1 in 10 like mine ?

Do you get a huge cloud of smoke once you do manage to get it started ? If this is the case, check out the following thread in which John and others suggest some further oil related possibilities (which I'm considering about mine);

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=009427

Try the old reliable 4 step method:
1- Pump the bulb to pressure the fuel delivery system
2- Turn the key to "on". Do NOT engage the starter.
3- Hold (push) the key in for an 8 count to open the primer.
4- Engage starter.

The motor should start almost immeaditly. You may have to tap the primer a few times while it warms up.

Good luck!
