Hi all, I just purchased my very 1st boat. It is a 1990 Ranger with a 150 hp V6 engine. My boat has been winterized since November. I parked the boat in my yard with the prop trimmed up. I later was told to lower the engine for the winter. I did and about an hour later I see drops of oil coming out of the prop. Should I be concerned? I was told that since the boat has been sitting for a while and it just turned cold that this is normal. Could someone help, I know nothing about boat motors.

Depends which oil is coming out...

If its residual oil from the gas/oil mix (or "fogging oil" used to winterize the engine for storage) draining out of the engine its no big deal

If its oil coming out of the gear case then you might have an issue with the gear case seals.

Need to identify what oil you have dripping.

If it's black and looks like a runny tar-nothing to worry about. That's residual exhaust crap running down the exhaust tube. If it's a sort of clear color, perhaps blue/green or maybe amber-it could be a problem. That's the color of fresh gear oil. If it's leaking-need to check it.

Smell the leaking oil. If it stinks, it is gear oil and you have a leak. If it smells like gasoline or motor oil, it is not an issue.
