Hey guys I've read through many conversations on hear trying to diagnose my issue and I haven't found my answer yet so here it goes.

I recently purchased an old boat with a 1990 evinrude 175vro outboard (vro pump removed) so I mix the gas 50_1. On my maiden voyage the boat ran great for 4hrs then after an hour or so of floating around I started it, it stumbled some so I gave it some gas in neutral to clean it out then put it in gear and it fell on its face and died now it will only pop and bang. I've got spark. I'm getting gas, even when adding gas or starting fluid it only pops. My compression is 90 give or take a pound on all 6 cylinders which seems kinda low but what really has me scratching my head is when checking timing it looks to me like its 180 off.
the light flashes at #1 TDC when cranking but when I remove the spark plug on #1 and turn the motor by hand until it reaches TDC the flywheel shows it's off roughly 180. I'm getting bolts tomorrow for my puller and I'll let you know if the key is sheared but any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Lap the 2 tapers for a proper fit .----Only install a factory genuine part replacement key.-----Install with tapers clean and dry.

Sure enough sheared key! The stator has been replaced and I would say they didn't tighten the flywheel enough. Damage was minimal, I got a good fit with some lapping compound and presson blue. New evinrude key. Now fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. What should the timming be at idle? I get about 5 deg. Retarded and I have a little sputter every once and a while.

Sorry-----You only set maximum timing advance.-----Idle timing looks after itself.-----Idle timing is the point where throttle plates open.-----At idle , throttle plates are closed and idle speed is controlled by retarding the timing.----Do not adjust timing if you are not sure of the procedures !!!

I'm very capable of setting timming if someone could give me the procedure and the max advance I'd just like to double check everything now that I know someone else has been into the motor. They have 28deg marked with a marker, I'll check it on the lake this weekend thanks

Ok tested her out and everything seems good on the top end I'm at 28deg Advanced at wide open throttle and its running strong. Max rpm is 5500 wich is higher than I had before this mess but now at idle it seems to have an intermittent backfire and stalls, starts no problem but will stall again. I'm assuming its something simple I can adjust in the linkage? No water issues, good gas, new plugs

Well since nobody was interested in another thread on rough idle I'll just close with this. I sould have been in a sea foam commercial. I put the gas line rite in the bottle until I could see it was being burned (white smoke), shut it off and left it for an hour, started it up cleaned it out (lots of white smoke) and like magic she purrs like a kitten again!
