Have heard many horror stories about VRO failure. My boat runs great with no
problems. Could I change my VRO line from tank to engine to a clear hose and then
maybe detect air or no oil movement at a quick glance. Just a thought for safety
sake. Just wondering would you actually be able to see the oil moving?

You would not be able to see the oil moving unless there were air other impurities in the line.

I would be concerned about clear tubing holding up in the marine environment.

The VRO system is VERY reliable, just make sure your warning horn is working. It should give a telltale "beep" every time you turn the ignition on.

UV rays will yellow, harden and crack clear hose in a short amount of time. The system as djohns says is quite reliable. Twice annually take a sample from the bottom of the oil reservoir (a turkey baster works well for this - don't let the wife catch you tho!!). Check the sample for water or other contaminants. Every other year, remove and clean the oil pick up - remember to purge air out of the system whenever the oil pick up is disturbed and run a tank of premix until oil consumption is verified. Lastly, make sure the alarm is working and "listen" to what your engine is telling you.

-John
