The original lower unit had a forward gear code stamp of 5 and a driveshaft stamp of 4. I bought a used unit that has a forward gear code stamp of 8 and a driveshaft stamp of 4. The newer replacement unit seems to have a much larger distance to throw between forward and reverse than the old unit, but otherwise fits fine. I cant get the adjustment right to get the new unit to shift properly between forward, neutral, and reverse. Its like the overall throw isnt long enough, if that makes sense. Does anyone have any pointers or can tell me why the forward gear of 8 might make a difference? I thought this was just for shimming reference.

Since nobody is jumping on this....I'll put in my two cents.
There are 3 holes in the (control-side) lever bracket that will affect the adjustment of the shift-cable.
I believe the bottom hole is for longer travel??

Is the dog the same length?
Year of the drives?
Can you add some pics?
I'll try to find my gear housing reading material and see
if I can make some sense of this?
