1990 Force 150hp running poorly!

I have a 1990 150hp Force o/b on a 19ft Bayliner Capri & every time I put the boat in the water & start moving, my engine starts acting like its missing then starts loosing power. While trying to travel at a constant speed, the engine's power will increase & decrease without even touching the throttle. It gets worse the longer I stay out! I buried the throttle to see what would happen & the engine kept jumping to different speeds like it was getting air in the fuel line or something.
It runs great when its in my backyard while in neutral & in forward & reverse, but as soon as I shove off the dock & make it push the load of the boat, it starts acting up. I just siphoned out all the old gas & put fresh gas in so that shouldn't be an issue. It has brand new spark plugs & my mechanic said the compression was fine. Could an air leak in the fuel line cause this or do I have bigger problems? Any help would be grealy appreciated!

Sharkbait

Re: 1990 Force 150hp running poorly!

I have a 92 Force 150 with an Autoblend II oil injection. I had a similar problem caused by a combination of 1) loose fuel line connection at Autoblend on the inlet (bigger hose) coming from the gas tank, and 2) a collapsed hose barb on the plastic part of the autoblend. I fixed it by putting a small plastic tube inside the plastic hose barb and retightening the hose back onto the autoblend. Exact same symptoms you describe before/ perfect operation to WOT in choppy waters after.

Re: 1990 Force 150hp running poorly!

Thanks for the input! My mechanic told me to replace a 1/4" fuel hose & primer bulb running from the splash well connector to the engine with a larger 5/8" hose because he thought it was restricting the fuel intake to the engine. However, I was unable to do so because it clearly was designed for the 1/4" hose. The hose had a small shutoff value as well so I removed that last night. I also discovered a couple of small holes in one of the fuel lines running into the choke assembly so I repaired that. I checked all the other visable hoses in and around the engine & didn't see any more obvious leaks. The problem only happens in the water so I was unable to find out if this worked last night.
This afternoon I'm going to back the boat down into the water, crank it up & put it in forward a little while its still on the trailer & one by one remove the spark plug wires to test if one of the carburetors is the source of my headaches.

I also have the same motor but the 89 version. I also had the same problems - twice, a few years apart. The first time it was the stator. The second time it was a fuel pump. In both cases compression was great and it ran fine until you got it out on the water and put a load behind it. Hope you get it fixed.

Mine was also the stator. But it didn't need replacing, I just fixed one of the wires coming from the stator.

Re: 1990 Force 150hp running poorly!

You guys were right on the money!
I had to replace the stator along with one of three power packs. I also corrected several other wiring problems associated with the other power packs and replaced a couple of spark plug wires. She's purring like a kitten again! Sorry it took so long for me to response. I certainly appreciate all the advise! :)
