I'm new to boat engines and am wondering how to tell if ignition is properly adjusted. Are there index marks under flywheel for full advance and retard? This is on a 1990 35 hp Force engine that runs very good and yes I understand its only 35 hp but feels very "lazy" in midrange. Compression in very good both cylinders, carb spot-less, spark plug burn and piston wash a tad rich but close. I fully understand the effects of too much ignition advance just wondering if this engine is set properly. Thanks

The mid range??? Could be the prop is wrong? Size of the prop?
What RPM's are you getting at full throttle? Post the rpm's.
What boat and size? Load in the boat?
The motor installed right?
The cavitation plate even with the bottom?
The lock down pin in the right position?
Answer these questions and maybe we can figure it out?
The thing about these motors is the timing usually won't move or change unless someone has messed with it.

engine is mounted on 1990 16' Grumman V bottom fishing boat, Fairly heavy boat with all gear and gas. boat planes ok with 1 person, barely with 2 persons and wont with 3. Its not a tiller and has power trim. have tried numerous trim locations. P273 prop in good condition. By midrange I mean... boat runs very well say at trolling speed, give it wide open throttle and it seems to labor either like no power or too much prop. When it finally does plane and go it will run guessing 20-25 mph, rpm sounds fairly high(no tach) Found out that P273 is more a "cruising" prop, would P293 be better? Thanks

The P273 or P293 would be a factory or manufacturer part #.
I think the standard prop is a 10x10p
Any other numbers stamped on the prop?
You need to figure out the rpm's at speed.
They sell a product called Tiny Tach. It will give the info you need.
They also have timing lights with the rpm's in the display.
Sounds like the 35 might be a bit small for the boat and load???
Profile? Location? Pics of the boat and transom?
