My 1990 Johnson 140 chokes and starts with key in the ignition but won't turn off. Can someone kindly explain the process and where the engine grounds itself out at so I can find the problem. I'm pretty sure it's not at the ignition. I have twins and I've had them both cranked up and they will do so without even having the main control connector pluged in. I have seperated the engines and have one on separate controls with ignition but won't stop.

The black/yellow wire going to the power pack has to be grounded in order to shut the engine down. You must have a severed wire or a bad connection in a connector, you will have to use an ohm meter to check the circut. If the ignition switch does not ground the kill wre the engine will not shut down.

Ok, I got to looking for the wires and looked at the two separate ignitions and wires that came off the boston whaler and noticed the three prong connnectors and two black wires coming out that wasn't hooked up. I went to the engine and noticed the same wires ( in this case they were black) they were cut. One was going to ground by starter bolt and the other was going into harness towards power pack. I'm almost certain theses are it. These engines had dual controls with separate ignitions. On these new controls I noticed a three prong male connector sticking out of contol box and a female hiding inside the hull of ranger going forward towards dash. They are about two inches shy of reaching this control box I put in so I'll ad some wire and after get the female pluged in I guess I'll look for two wires somewhere that will connect to the two that are cut at the engine.

I also have a problem not getting water out the upper exhuast beside the pee hole. I'm assuming the thermostats are stuck so I'm going to take them out and stick them in some boiling water to the if they will open. The other engine water is coming out a little there so I think their stuck open a little. I can't start the engine too much until I fix a stripped lower unit bolt causing water to spray out .

If I do happen to start it I should be able to just touch the two wires togethor at the engine to kill it for now instead of getting zapped pulling plug wires if I am correct. Atleast until I track the two wires in the around the dash down.

I was wrong, that wasn't even it. When I touch them two togethor the horn in the control box goes off. I'm going to have to figure that one out too. The VRO has been separated from these engines. Right now I'm only working on one that I put on a 1982 Ranger 330V. I got a deal on a 1981 25' Boston Whaler that was busted up on one side, got both motors along with the tilt and trims working and then bought me a 1982 15' Tidecraft spitfire hull and this Ranger. Will post pics as soon as I figure it out.

The onlly yellow and black I've found is the one along with the orange one that comes out of the top of the port side. Head cover that goes up to the power pack. I did see two yellow ones coming out the back of stator going into power pack. All the wires seem to be coated in black paint. Thanks for the help. The other things I was talking about went to gauges. Still havn't found a way to shut it down besides pulling plugs and this isn't good.
