I recently bought a Mach 1 spitfire. I am in the process of restoring this boat but have found limited information. I have found out that it might be a super rare boat because the company that built it was only in business for a short time before it was bought out by freedom boats. Any addition resources or information would be graft appreciated.

1990 Mach 1 Spitfire, :welcome: to iboats. Nice to have you aboard...

I can't tell you if your boat is worth anything, but I can tell you that the company that built the boat and only making a few and then swapping ownership doesn't make them any more valuable then any other limited production. There are literally tons of boat builders that have come and gone. But if you like the boat, that is all that really matters. Collector's value is a personal issue with boats. Rarity is not an issue that makes them any more valuable them any other. JMHO!

If you are looking to restore your boat, post up some pictures to show what is suspect with yours so we can see what you are dealing with.

I thought so as well, until I pulled up a piece of the carpet and saw that the floor was not glassed in. There ended up to be some rot in the floor around the bilge, the transom drain hole was not glassed and the motor mounts were also suspect. I will try and get more pics up

Not sure how your posting your pics but...they are way to large to be usable.

IMG_0453.jpg IMG_0765.jpg IMG_0763.jpg IMG_0766.jpg here we go, I hope that these photos work better. First is the port side aft rot, second is port side stinger after foam is removed, third is port side foam removal, and the last what i think is a jig setup hole that was found in the stringer after the foam had been removed

Okay time to make your decision if you are going to refurbish this boat or sell it off. If you are going to refurbish it, then let's get going.

Very first thing you need to do now is snap up tons of pictures of everything inside the boat and outside from every angle you can think of. Include areas that you would never think would be important. Next, take tons of measurement and plot them on a paper and pencil sketch or computer drawing of your hull. You will not believe how absolutely important the pictures and measurement will come in handy down the road with your project. So do those thing now!

Then post some more pictures and tell us what you want to do and we will make suggestions and ideas to get you going. JMHO!

sounds good, but I gave up after what I found in the hull, figured it better suited to send to someone who knows about fiberglass. I did a bunch of research on glass and didn't find it a very appealing process. I am going to focus my efforts on what I can do to reorganize the helm and storage areas of the boat. I have a mock up of the boat in my garage. seats and interior panels.

The seats are currently pedestal seats, I believe that they were originally on a box, due to the fact that i needed to add plating on the bottom side of the seat because the plastic was not holding up to the smaller pedestal mount. I sort of like the idea of the box if I can find an adjustable, swiveling boat seat mount that works. This would give me some undersea storage. Thoughts on looks?

The quote i received for the floor, transom, and motor mounts was around 4000. A bit on the high side I thought but well worth it if it completed properly. I will also be getting a quote for the hull clean up but probably will not get it done until fall. I thought that a custom fiberglass swim deck would be nice but that was quoted out at 3500-3800. Currently not in my budget but hopefully in the future.

I am unable to post any new pics until i get the boat back, slated for late April. I'll take some, and then it will go to the engine guy to reinstall the motor.

After all that hopefully the current rats nest wiring I have, gets the boat to run and I will have more questions and pictures.

If you've done your research and know what's involved in doing the fiberglass work properly it would be a good idea to visit your baby frequently to make sure the guy doing the work isn't taking shortcuts. JMO but I think the old "trust but verify" is good advice, especially regarding the work being done in areas below deck that you'll never see if you wait until it's done.

^^^^^^ I recommend thinking about this man's point. And most can understand why you do not want to take on such an edeavor as it is a "big" job, done a few myself. Not sure how the Repair Shop would feel or if they would even let you stop by periodically to have a look. Maybe the Shop is honest and will provide you with a fine job/product. Very sharp boat......sporty, fast looking. Def looks to be worth the restoration....reminds me a bit of an old 21' Scarab I used to own.

The shop I picked to do the work builds boats. They also take pictures of the work as they are doing it and give them to you when the job is complete. I will try and visit them to check on my toy, that's a wonderful idea. Thanks.

This is a fun 18 ft 4.3l mercruiser powered boat. I have driven outboards before, 15hp and 90hp fishing boats. This is my first I/O and fiberglass and I hope that I didn't get burned.

Sits in the lake all summer, every year since 1992. We Re floored, Re upholstered, Re powered, and got an aftermarket outdrive on it. It's teaching the next generation about watersports and boat maintenance now
